As of 2026-09-20 18:54 UTC, Bluesky’s trend service was surfacing 25 topics, 3 of them still marked as actively trending rather than cooling or fading, across 25 topics with a published post count totalling 190,970posts. That is Bluesky’s own count of posts matched to each topic, not an estimate of ours.
The status label on each topic is Bluesky’s own grading, not ours. A topic marked trending is still accelerating; cooling means it has passed its peak but is still active; fading means the conversation has largely moved on. That distinction is the useful part of this board and almost no trends page publishes it, because almost no network exposes it.
Every other major network charges for this or hides it behind a login. Bluesky serves it from public.api.bsky.app to anyone who asks, which is why this page exists and why it needs no account, no key and no quota to work.
The endpoint is app.bsky.unspecced.getTrends. The “unspecced” prefix is Bluesky’s own: it is public and it is what the official client uses, but its lexicon is provisional and its fields can change. When it does not answer, this page falls back to app.bsky.unspecced.getTrendingTopics and says on the board that the post counts, timings and example accounts are unavailable from that source.
Bluesky publishes no follower history at all. There is no growth endpoint, no historical count, and nothing in the protocol that lets you ask what an account had a week ago. The climbing board therefore cannot be reproduced from the public API: it is the difference between our own daily snapshots of the accounts in our Bluesky directory.
It is ranked on percentage growth rather than raw followers gained, and that choice changes the answer completely. A ranking by raw gain returns the same handful of accounts with millions of followers every single week, because a 0.5% week on a two-million account beats a 40% week on a five-thousand account by a factor of five. Percentage growth answers the question people are actually asking, which is who is breaking out.
The 2,000-follower floor is there for the opposite failure. Without it the board would be an endless list of accounts that went from 12 followers to 40, which is a real 233% and tells you nothing.
It is not a hashtag ranking. Bluesky’s trend service groups conversations into named topics with a written description, which is closer to a news desk than to a list of tags, and it does not publish a hashtag volume chart for anyone to read.
It is not a global growth leaderboard. The climbing half only sees the Bluesky accounts in our own directory, and it says how many that is on the board. An account we do not track cannot appear on it however fast it is growing.
It carries no history. Both halves are a snapshot: the topics because the endpoint serves only the current set, and the climbing board because it is a seven-day window recomputed each hour. Nothing here charts a topic over time.
app.bsky.unspecced.getTrends on public.api.bsky.app, Bluesky's own unauthenticated AppView. Verified live on 2 September 2026: it answers HTTP 200 with no API key and no login, and returns each topic's display name, a one-line description, a post count, a status of trending, cooling or stale, a category and five example accounts. This is Bluesky's own trend detection, not our reconstruction of it.
Because Bluesky has not frozen its shape yet. It is the same endpoint the official client uses, and it is public, but the lexicon is explicitly provisional and the fields can change without notice. If it stops answering, this page falls back to app.bsky.unspecced.getTrendingTopics, which is also public but carries no post counts, no status and no example accounts. When that happens the page says so and leaves those columns blank instead of guessing.
The board is cached for ten minutes. Everyone asking the same question at the same moment should see the same answer, and refreshing a trends page twice a second should not put that load on Bluesky's AppView. The exact snapshot time is printed under the board.

It does not, which is why we snapshot it. Our own engine records follower counts daily across the Bluesky accounts in our directory, and the climbing board is the difference between today's count and the one from seven days ago. Nothing on Bluesky exposes follower history, so this half of the page cannot be reproduced from the public API alone.
They answer different questions and they can fail separately. Topics are what the whole network is posting about, read live from Bluesky. Climbing accounts are who is gaining followers fastest inside the slice of Bluesky our directory tracks. Either half can be unavailable without the other, and when one is, the page says which and why rather than showing an empty board.
