Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator

Analyze any public Instagram account's real engagement from its latest posts, with a post-by-post breakdown and the numbers behind every grade. The bands are size-matched: an account with 10,000 to 100,000 followers is rated average at 2 percent and excellent at 6 percent, and both thresholds fall as an audience grows.

Works with any public Instagram account. Private accounts can't be analyzed.

How it works

  1. 1

Enter a handle or your numbers

Type a public Instagram username, or switch to your own numbers if you would rather not look the account up.

  2. 2

    We read the latest posts

A lookup reads the public profile and its latest ~12 posts with their real like and comment counts. No login, nothing posted.

  3. 3

Read the rate against its band

The rate is graded against accounts of the same size, with the formula, the thresholds and every post shown.

Why Instagram Engagement Matters

Follower count is vanity. Engagement rate is the real metric that determines an Instagram account's true value and influence.

Audience Quality

High engagement means real people actually liking, saving, and commenting on your posts. It's the #1 signal of a valuable, active audience.

Account Value

Engagement is what a buyer checks after follower count, because it is the part of an audience that cannot be bought in bulk. Two accounts of the same size and different engagement are not the same asset.

Sponsorship ROI

Brands choose creators based on engagement, not followers. A higher engagement rate directly translates to higher sponsored-post rates.

What counts as a good Instagram engagement rate

This calculator grades an Instagram account against size-matched bands rather than one flat number, because engagement falls as an audience grows. For an account with 10,000 to 100,000 followers the bands are 1% at the bottom, 2% for average, 3.5% for good and 6% for excellent. Above a million followers the same four thresholds drop to 0.6%, 1.2%, 2% and 3.5%.

The gap between the two ends of that table is the whole reason a single benchmark misleads. An account under 1,000 followers needs 11% to be rated excellent; an account over a million needs 3.5%, which is 3.1 times lower. A 2 percent rate is below average for a 5,000-follower account and comfortably good for a 5,000,000-follower one, and it is the same 2 percent.

The rate itself is likes plus comments across the most recent posts, divided by followers. That is a recent-content measure, not a lifetime one, so it moves with what an account has actually posted lately - which is the honest way round, because a brand is buying the next post rather than the archive. Instagram publishes no engagement distribution of its own, so these bands are the model's stated thresholds and not a percentile of the platform.

How the rate is calculated

The formula and its inputs, stated so the number can be reproduced by hand from a profile that is open in front of you.

What this cannot tell you

It cannot see saves, shares, sends or story taps, because Instagram does not publish them for accounts you do not own - and on Reels those are often the metrics that matter most. It reads only public accounts: a private profile exposes no post list, so there is nothing to average. And a rate on its own does not separate a genuinely engaged audience from a small one that inflates the denominator's effect, which is why the size band is shown next to the number rather than under it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

It depends on your account size. Small accounts (<10K) commonly see 3-7% and above; mid-size (10K-100K) typically average 2-3.5%; larger accounts (100K-1M) often land around 1.5-2.8%, and accounts over 1M frequently sit between 1-2%. Our calculator uses size-adjusted benchmarks so your rate is judged against accounts of a similar size, not a single global number.

How is Instagram engagement rate calculated?

We pull the latest ~12 posts from a public Instagram profile and use the real per-post like and comment counts: (avg likes + avg comments) / followers x 100. Because it's based on actual recent content rather than a single post, it reflects how your audience truly interacts with you.

Why does engagement rate matter more than follower count?

A big follower number with few likes and comments usually signals inactive or fake followers. Brands, sponsors, and buyers care about engagement rate because it measures the real, active audience. An account with 10K followers at 5% engagement is far more valuable than one with 100K followers at 0.5%.

Does this work for any Instagram account?

It works for public Instagram accounts. Private accounts don't expose their recent posts, so per-post likes and comments can't be analyzed. Make sure the profile is public for an accurate engagement breakdown.

How can I improve my Instagram engagement rate?

Post consistently, lean into Reels and carousels, write captions that invite replies, use relevant hashtags, and reply to comments quickly to signal an active community. Collaborations and targeted promotion can also expose your content to genuinely interested audiences who engage.

Is this Instagram engagement calculator free?

Yes. The PlayerSells Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator is completely free with no sign-up required. Just enter any public Instagram username to get a full breakdown.

Buying or selling Instagram accounts?

PlayerSells holds the buyer's payment in escrow until the account has been handed over and checked, so neither side has to trust a stranger.

PlayerSells is not affiliated with Instagram or Meta. The benchmark bands on this page are the thresholds our own model grades against, printed directly from it, and not a published Instagram statistic - Instagram releases no engagement distribution. Per-post figures for a looked-up account are read from that account's public posts at the moment you run it.
