Instagram Fake Follower Checker

Check any public Instagram account for fake or inactive followers. We read its latest 12 posts and grade likes, comments and follow-backs against 16,949 Instagram accounts PlayerSells measured, banded by size: a typical account with 100K to 1M followers gets 3.37% of its followers engaging per post.

Public accounts with 10,000 followers or more are graded; smaller accounts get their numbers without a grade. The owner is not notified.

How it works

  1. 1

    Enter a username

Any public Instagram account. Yours, a creator you want to hire, or an account you are thinking of buying.

  2. 2

    We read the latest posts

Followers, following and the likes and comments on the latest 12 posts, from the public profile.

  3. 3

    Graded against peers

Each signal is placed among Instagram accounts of the same size from our measured directory, so a 50K account is never judged by 5M-account numbers.

What the checker looks at

Three public signals that separate a real audience from a padded one, each graded within its follower band rather than against one global average.

Engagement rate

Average likes plus comments per post, over followers. The signal that decides the verdict: bought and dead followers rarely interact.

Likes per comment

How many likes arrive for every comment. Far above peers is common when likes are bought; far below can mean comment pods or giveaways.

Follow-back ratio

Accounts followed per 1,000 followers. Follow-for-follow growth leaves a much higher ratio than accounts that grew on content.

Post by post

Each of the latest posts against the typical range for the account's size, so one viral Reel cannot hide eleven quiet posts.

Instagram engagement benchmarks

Across 16,949 public Instagram accounts PlayerSells measured between August and October 2026, a typical account with 100K to 1M followers gets likes and comments equal to 3.37% of its followers on each post. The bottom tenth gets 0.41% or less, which is where this checker starts flagging an audience. Measured 10 October 2026.

Engagement falls as an account grows. The median is 6.32% for accounts with 10K to 100K followers, 3.37% at 100K to 1M, 1.94% at 1M to 10M and 0.97% above 10 million followers, across 3,150, 8,113, 4,576 and 678 accounts respectively.

Likes outnumber comments by a median of 82 to 1 on Instagram accounts with 100K to 1M followers, and only 5% go past 395 to 1. A typical account of that size follows 1.1 accounts for every 1,000 followers; the top 5% follow 10 or more. Measured 10 October 2026.

From the PlayerSells Instagram directory: public, non-adult accounts with 1,000+ followers, at least 6 posts analysed and read in the 60 days to 10 October 2026. Engagement recomputed as (average likes + average comments) / followers.

How the check works

No outside tool can count fake followers, because Instagram does not show anyone the follower list but the owner, and even the owner sees it one name at a time. What is public is how the audience behaves. Bought followers and bot accounts do not like or comment, so an account padded with them engages well below honest accounts of the same size. That is the signal this checker measures, and it is the same one the paid audit tools rely on.

We take the latest 12 posts, average their likes and comments, and divide by followers. That rate is placed on the ladder of accounts in the same follower band: under the 10th percentile is a strong warning, under the 25th a caution. Likes per comment and the follow-back ratio are placed the same way and flagged only at the outer 5%, because each has innocent explanations: a brand that follows its customers, or comments switched off.

Where the numbers come from is printed under every result. If the PlayerSells directory read the account in the last 14 days, the check runs on that reading: averages over its latest posts, no outside request. Otherwise the public profile is read live, which adds the post-by-post chart. You can also type the four numbers yourself; the grading is identical.

The result never prints a percentage of fake followers. A single number like that would have to be invented, and an account can buy likes to hide bought followers. What it prints is where the account sits among 16,949 real accounts, with the numbers it was decided on.

The benchmark ladders

The percentiles every result is graded against, by follower band.

Accounts under 10,000 followers are not graded. Our sample of 1K-10K accounts holds 432 accounts skewed towards one viral Reel, too few and too unusual to judge a small account by.

What it cannot see

  • The follower list itself. Nobody outside Instagram can audit followers one by one.
  • Bought likes covering bought followers. An account that buys both can look healthy here; a sudden jump in followers on a growth chart is the other place to look.
  • Reach from non-followers. Reels are shown to people who do not follow the account, which lifts likes and can make a weak audience look stronger.
  • Stories, saves, shares and reach, which only the owner sees in Insights. Asking for that screenshot is the best follow-up to this check.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if an Instagram account has fake followers?

Enter the username above. The checker reads the latest 12 posts, works out the engagement rate and grades it against Instagram accounts of the same size. Engagement in the bottom tenth for the account's size is the strongest public sign of fake or inactive followers.

Can any tool show the exact percentage of fake followers?

Not honestly. Instagram does not let outside tools read follower lists, so any exact percentage is an estimate dressed up as a measurement. This checker shows where the account sits among real accounts of its size and the numbers behind it instead.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

It depends on size. In our measurements the median account engages 6.32% of its followers per post at 10K to 100K followers, 3.37% at 100K to 1M, 1.94% at 1M to 10M and 0.97% above 10 million. Compare an account with its own band, not with one global number.

Why are accounts under 10,000 followers not graded?

Small accounts vary too much, and our sample of them is too small, to grade fairly. The checker still shows their engagement rate and ratios, and the bands above give a rough guide.

Does the account owner know I checked?

No. The checker reads only the public profile and the owner is not notified.

Should I check an Instagram account before buying it?

Yes. Follower count is the number a seller can inflate most cheaply, and an account full of inactive followers is worth far less than its count suggests. Run this check, ask for an Insights screenshot, and pay through escrow.

Why does a hidden like count stop the check?

When an owner hides likes, the public profile reports zero for every post. Grading that would call a healthy account dead, so the checker reports engagement as not measured instead.

Buying or selling Instagram accounts?

PlayerSells holds the buyer's payment in escrow until the account has been handed over and checked, so neither side has to trust a stranger.

PlayerSells is not affiliated with Instagram or Meta. Profiles are read live from public data; benchmarks are from 16,949 accounts in the PlayerSells Instagram directory, measured 10 October 2026.
