How often does a YouTube counter update?

Every 20 seconds while the page is open. That interval is not arbitrary: it is the fastest we can read YouTube without degrading the crawler that feeds our directory. YouTube Data API v3. YouTube itself rounds subscriber counts to three significant figures above 1,000, so this number moves in steps, not one by one.

One reading serves every viewer. A thousand people watching the same handle is still one request to YouTube per interval, which is why we can offer this at all.
