YouTube Tag Extractor

Paste any YouTube video link to see the tags its creator saved, in order and ready to copy. Each tag is counted against YouTube's 500-character limit the way YouTube counts it, checked against the title and description, and compared with the tags on the channel's 10 latest uploads.

Watch, youtu.be, Shorts and live links all work, or the 11-character video ID. The creator is not notified.

How it works

  1. 1

    Paste a video link

Any public or unlisted video: a watch link, a youtu.be share link, a Shorts or live link, or the 11-character ID.

  2. 2

    We read it from YouTube

The video through YouTube's own Data API, then the channel's 10 latest other uploads for comparison.

  3. 3

    Copy and compare

Every tag in order, comma separated or one per line, with the 500-character count and where each tag appears.

What the extractor shows

Everything comes from YouTube's official API rather than a scrape of the watch page, so the tags are exactly the list the creator saved.

The tags, in order

Every tag on the video in the order it was saved, ready to copy as a comma-separated list or one per line.

The 500-character count

The whole list measured the way YouTube measures it, commas and quotes included, so the number matches what YouTube Studio enforces.

Title and description match

Which tags repeat words a viewer can already see, and which appear nowhere in the title or description.

The channel's habits

The tags that recur across the channel's 10 latest uploads, how many of them this video reuses, and its category and languages.

YouTube tags in numbers

Of the 440 videos on YouTube's trending charts in ten countries on 10 October 2026, 355 (80.7%) carried tags. The median tagged video used 14 tags and 176 of the 500 characters YouTube allows, and 76 of them (21.4%) used 450 characters or more.

Channels outside the charts tag fewer videos but write longer lists. Across the latest uploads of 120 channels with 10,000 to 1 million subscribers in the PlayerSells YouTube directory, 87 (72.5%) carried tags, with a median of 20 tags and 300 characters, against 14 tags and 176 characters on the trending charts. Measured 10 October 2026.

Most tags add words the viewer never sees. Of the 5,555 tags on trending videos on 10 October 2026, 60.5% appear in neither the title nor the description, not even as separate words; in the directory sample it was 68.6% of 1,715.

Shorts are tagged less often than regular videos. Of the 30 Shorts among the directory sample's latest uploads on 10 October 2026, 16 (53.3%) carried tags, against 71 of its 90 regular videos (78.9%).

Trending: YouTube's most-popular chart in the US, UK, India, Brazil, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Turkey and Indonesia, 50 videos each, 440 after removing duplicates; it held no Shorts. Directory: the newest public upload of 120 channels drawn at random from the PlayerSells YouTube catalogue. A video counts as a Short when YouTube serves it at its /shorts/ address. Both read through the YouTube Data API on 10 October 2026 and counted with the same code this tool runs.

Do YouTube tags help a video rank?

“Your video's title, thumbnail, and description are more important pieces of metadata for your video's discovery. Tags can be useful if the content of your video is commonly misspelled. Otherwise, tags play a minimal role in your video's discovery.”
YouTube Help, "Add tags to your videos"

That is YouTube's own answer, and it is why this page does not sell tags as a ranking lever. A video is found through its title, its thumbnail and how viewers respond to it; tags are a small supporting signal, most useful for misspellings, abbreviations and the other names a subject goes by.

Copying a competitor's tags gives you their word list, not their ranking. What an extractor is good for is the research around it: seeing how creators in a niche describe a topic, finding spellings and alternate names you missed, checking that your own upload saved the list you meant, or reviewing a channel before you buy it.

The same help page warns that adding excessive tags to a video's description breaks YouTube's policies on spam, deceptive practices and scams. Keep tags in the tag field, and keep them about the video.

How the 500-character limit is counted

YouTube's Data API reference gives the rule: the commas between tags count toward the limit, and a tag that contains a space is counted as though it were wrapped in quotation marks. So "Foo-Baz" is 7 characters and "Foo Baz" is 9. Worked through on three tags:

TagCharactersCounted as
minecraft99
"minecraft survival"1820
mods44
Commas between 3 tags2
Total against the 500 limit35

A Shorts title or a long description does not change any of this: the limit applies to the tag field alone. Every count on this page uses the rule above, so it matches what YouTube Studio accepts.

Tags and hashtags are different things

Tags live in a field in YouTube Studio that viewers never see. Hashtags are words with a # written into the title or description: they are visible, clickable, and YouTube shows up to three of them by the video title.

The result lists both, because they are easy to confuse. YouTube ignores every hashtag on a video that has more than 60 of them, and the extractor flags a video that crosses that line.

What it cannot tell you

  • Tags on private videos. YouTube shares a private video's details only with its owner; the extractor says when a video is private rather than calling it missing.
  • Which searches bring a video its views. That is in YouTube Analytics, visible to the channel owner only.
  • How much weight YouTube gives any single tag. YouTube does not publish it beyond calling the role of tags minimal.
  • A tag edited in the last 6 hours. A video's answer is reused for that long, so a just-edited list may show the earlier version.
  • The channel's whole catalogue. The comparison reads its 10 latest public uploads, Shorts and long videos together.

Put this extractor on your site

The extractor as a frame for a blog post, a creator resource page or a course. It runs the same lookup as this page, with the same limits, and resizes to its result.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see the tags on a YouTube video?

YouTube does not show tags on the watch page. Paste the video's link into the extractor above and it reads them through YouTube's Data API: the same list, in the same order, that the creator saved in YouTube Studio. Watch, youtu.be, Shorts and live links all work.

Do tags still matter for YouTube SEO?

Only a little, by YouTube's own account. Its help page says the title, thumbnail and description are more important for discovery, that tags help when a subject is commonly misspelled, and that otherwise tags play a minimal role. Put the work into the title and thumbnail first.

What is the character limit for YouTube tags?

500 characters for the whole list. The commas between tags count, and a tag with a space in it gets two quotation marks added to its count, so "Foo Baz" uses 9 characters. The extractor counts this way, so its number matches what YouTube Studio will accept.

Why does a video show no tags?

Because the creator did not add any. Tags are optional and many large channels skip them: on 10 October 2026, 19.3% of the videos on YouTube's trending charts in ten countries had none. A private video is different: its tags cannot be read at all, and the extractor says so.

Can I copy tags from another creator's video?

You can, and the copy buttons are there for it, but copying a list does not copy the ranking that video earned. Use other creators' tags to find spellings, abbreviations and alternate names you missed, then keep the ones that describe your own video.

Does it work on YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Shorts carry tags exactly like long videos, set in YouTube Studio, though fewer creators bother: 53.3% of the Shorts in our 10 October 2026 sample had any. Paste the Shorts link as it is; the extractor reads the video ID out of it.

Is it free, and does the creator find out?

It is free with no sign-up, limited to 30 videos a day per network to protect the YouTube API allowance the site shares. It reads public data only, and the creator is not notified.

Buying or selling YouTube accounts?

PlayerSells holds the buyer's payment in escrow until the account has been handed over and checked, so neither side has to trust a stranger.

PlayerSells is not affiliated with YouTube or Google. Video data is read live from the YouTube Data API v3 and reused for up to 6 hours; the figures in the numbers block were measured 10 October 2026. The 500-character rule is from the YouTube Data API reference for video tags, and the statement on how tags affect discovery is from YouTube Help (answer 146402).
