Many friends and well-wishers have reached out to me regarding a recent publication by the Federal University Dutse. Since I have now received the University's official acknowledgment, I consider it appropriate to make this short clarification. First, contrary to the impression created by the publication, my postgraduate studies were not sponsored by the Federal University Dutse. Both my Master's and PhD studies were fully funded through scholarships awarded by King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia. However, during my approved study leave, FUD continued to pay my regular salary. Second, under the terms of my study leave agreement, staff members who, for any reason, could not return to serve are required to refund the salaries paid during the period of study leave. In view of my current professional commitments, I opted for the refund option. Today, the university has acknowledged the receipt of the total amount through the official Remita platform, thereby fulfilling my obligation under the agreement. The University has confirmed in writing, as attached, that my liability has been fully settled. I appreciate everyone who reached out with concern and support. The continued detention of Malam Nasir El-Rufai is setting a dangerous precedent. What message are we passing on to the younger generation? That once you acquire political power, you can use it against whoever you want, while institutions meant to provide checks and balances remain helpless? You do not have to like El-Rufai. You do not have to agree with his politics. You do not even have to sympathize with him to insist that the right thing must be done. This is bigger than Nasir El-Rufai as an individual. It is about the strength of our institutions, respect for the rule of law, and the kind of democracy we want to build. If El-Rufai has committed an offence, let the evidence be presented and let the courts determine his guilt or innocence through a fair and transparent process. But prolonged detention without due regard for his fundamental rights should concern every Nigerian. Because if it is El-Rufai today, none of us knows who it could be tomorrow. Our institutions must never be reduced to instruments for settling political scores. Bail conditions, investigations, prosecutions, and court processes must be guided by law and justice, not political convenience. That is how strong nations are built.

He raised a very important point, asking that beyond lamentation, what can we do, within the law, to help curb the situation? He observed that whenever such incidents occur, we express our frustrations for a few days and then move on. In contrast, he cited the recent Ibadan incident and highlighted how their influencers and the community leaders responded with concrete actions, which ultimately produced the desired results. He suggested a number of ideas, including peaceful protests, policy briefs, and other forms of civic engagement. I promised him that I would bring the issue to the public so that we can gather contributions and ideas on how to move forward. Some months ago, I was among those who were highly optimistic about the appointment of Major General Christopher Musa as Minister of Defence following the resignation of Mr. Badaru Abubakar. When his nomination was announced, many Nigerians welcomed it with excitement and confidence. At the time, however, I remember being cautioned by some highly respected elders who understood certain realities from within. Looking at General Musa’s apparent record as Chief of Defence Staff, we believed he would bring to the office a strong sense of patriotism and national unity. We expected a leader who would see Nigeria first, not religion, region, or tribe. That was why I found his recent remarks on Channels Television deeply troubling. His comments, in my view, appeared unnecessarily divisive and gave the impression of someone identifying more strongly with a particular section of the country than with the broader Nigerian identity expected of a national leader. Many of us who initially welcomed his appointment with great hope are now deeply disappointed.
