Smithsonian engagement report
@smithsonian - 2.2M followers on X
Measured over 2 original posts from a 30-day window, last computed on September 1, 2026.
Engagement
Early reading. We have captured 2 original posts for this account, below the 8 we require before treating a median as settled. The numbers above describe what we have seen so far, not a finished profile of the account.
A typical post picks up 82 interactions against 2.2M followers, an engagement rate of 0.004%. Measured over 2 original posts, its engagement rate beats 21% of tracked accounts of a similar size. That is a reason to look at how the audience behaves - reply depth, saves, whether the followers are recent - rather than a conclusion about it on its own. Posts are seen about 14K times each, and 0.583% of those impressions turn into an interaction. That is about 0.633% of the follower count, which is the gap between an audience on paper and an audience in a timeline. Posting runs at about 0.07 posts a day over the last 30 days, though only 7% of days saw any activity at all. Most posts go out around 11:00 UTC, and Thursday is the busiest day of the week. Of the 2 posts sampled, 50% carry an image or video and 100% link out. The account's strongest tracked post pulled 7.0K interactions, about 85x its own typical post. Only 2 original posts have been captured so far, fewer than the 8 posts we want behind a median before treating it as settled. Read the figures above as an early measurement of this account, not as a finished profile of it.

Compared with accounts its own size
Smithsonian's engagement rate beats 21% of the tracked X accounts closest to it in follower count. A percentile is spread evenly by construction, so 50 really is the middle of that group and 90 really is its top tenth.
Where this sits in the catalog
At 0.004%, Smithsonian sits above the 10th percentile of the 36,521 accounts in this comparison. That places it in the bottom 25% band, which runs below 0.012%.

| Percentile | Engagement rate |

| 75th percentile | 0.434% |
| 90th percentile | 2.10% |

Posting timing
This account posts most often around 11:00 UTC, and Thursday is its busiest day of the week. The bars below are the catalog-wide pattern, with this account's own busiest slot marked. They do not show how this account performs at each hour: we keep one aggregate per account, not one per hour, so that measurement does not exist in our data.

As the keeper of memory for the nation, it is our privilege and responsibility to tell accurate and complete histories. As has been recently reported, in July, a placard was removed from @amhistorymuseum’s exhibit “The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden.” The intent of the “Impeachment” section of the exhibit is to reflect all impeachment proceedings in our nation’s history. The placard, which was meant to be a temporary addition to a 25-year-old exhibition, did not meet the museum’s standards in appearance, location, timeline, and overall presentation. It was not consistent with other sections in the exhibit and moreover blocked the view of the objects inside its case. For these reasons, we removed the placard. We were not asked by any Administration or other government official to remove content from the exhibit. The section in question, “Impeachment,” will be updated in the coming weeks to reflect all impeachment proceedings in our nation’s history.

Today we remember Rosalynn Carter, First Lady from 1977-1981. In this July 1978 photo, she’s visiting @amhistorymuseum, then known as the National Museum of History and Technology, to donate her gold-trimmed blue chiffon inaugural gown to the collection. She’d first worn the dress to her husband’s inaugural ball as governor of Georgia—and repeated the outfit. She is pictured with Smithsonian Secretary S. Dillon Ripley and political history curator Margaret Klapthor. This photo is in the collection of our @SmithsonianArch.

Recent reports about the Smithsonian removing the historic Greensboro, North Carolina, lunch counter are inaccurate. In 1960, four Black college students remained at the segregated, “whites only” counter at the Greensboro Woolworth’s and refused to leave. Their sit-in helped ignite a youth-led movement to challenge inequality throughout the South. Two stools from the sit-ins remain on view at our @nmaahc as the centerpiece of an interactive exhibition. A large section of the Greensboro counter also remains on display at our @amhistorymuseum. Suggestions that the Smithsonian had planned or intended to remove these items are false. The Smithsonian preserves and protects all objects and artifacts in its collection to ensure their long-term conservation and to safeguard them for future generations. - What is Smithsonian's engagement rate on X?
- Smithsonian (@smithsonian) has an engagement rate of 0.004%, based on the median interactions across 2 original posts from the last 30 days against 2,222,807 followers. Replies, reposts and quote-posts of other people are excluded from that sample.
- Is that a good engagement rate?
- At 0.004%, Smithsonian sits above the 10th percentile of the 36,521 accounts in this comparison. Those comparison accounts are all large ones, because our scanning cadence is weighted towards big accounts, so this is a ranking among peers of similar scale rather than a ranking across X.
- Does @smithsonian have real engagement?
- Its engagement rate beats 21% of the tracked X accounts closest to it in follower count, which puts it in the bottom quarter for its size group. Ranking inside a size band matters because engagement rate falls as accounts grow, so a raw rate would mostly re-measure the follower count. It is a starting point for a look at follower quality, not a verdict on it.
- When does @smithsonian post?
- Most posts go out around 11:00 UTC, and Thursday is its busiest day, at roughly 0.07 posts per day across the measured window.
