My speculation about the WNBA: I’m increasingly convinced the WNBA is hiding something from its fans. Why is it so difficult to adopt a policy similar to the WTA’s, requiring players to undergo a one time genetic test to determine eligibility for the women’s category? The test can be conducted using a cheek swab, saliva or blood. Here’s my theory and I could be completely wrong: The WNBA may be hesitant because such a policy could reveal that players who would not meet the new eligibility standard have previously competed in the league. Meaning, they could have current players that were born a man that are currently in the league. If the WNBA adopts this type of testing, I also wouldn’t be surprised to see players quit or turn the issue into a broader protest potentially creating a rallying cry similar to what Colin Kaepernick became in the NFL. There’s another risk: once the league opens this door, whistleblowers could emerge with information that raises questions about how eligibility has been handled in the past. Again, this is speculation. I have no evidence that this has happened. But the longer the WNBA delays making what appears to be a straightforward decision about eligibility for the women’s league, the more questions people are going to ask. Defend the “W” in WNBA. Thoughts?
