Smash the patriarchy part 2 ⚜️ Swayamvara (स्वयंवर) literally means “choosing for oneself.” In ancient Indian traditions, a swayamvara was a marriage ceremony in which a woman of a royal or noble family was given the opportunity to choose her husband from among eligible suitors. The word comes from: Svayam (स्वयम्) ~ oneself Vara (वर) ~ bridegroom / chosen one It wasn’t one single standardized ritual. Different texts describe different forms: ~ In some traditions the woman personally selected a suitor, often by placing a garland around him. ~ In others, suitors had to complete a test or challenge before she made her choice. ~ In some accounts, her family and political circumstances clearly influenced the selection.
