Good people of the world, greetings from Ethiopia from a veteran Danish-Chilean journalist who plans to stay in this wonderful and welcoming country for the rest of my life. Are you up-to-date about the ongoing war that is raging in some parts of Ethiopia? If the answer is "no" or "very little", that's probably for the better. The less you have listened to the news about it, the less you have been misinformed. There has been much ado about the newly formed "Coalition for Survival" of armed rebel groups. This is more like an "Alliance of Desperation" among extremist ethnonationalists who hate each other's guts, but are prepared to try anything after years of bleeding support within their own ethnic constituencies, after suffering countless defections and internal splits. For instance, the Amhara Fano National Movement took up arms in 2023, arguing that the central government was too soft on the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), and so the Fano militia had to step up to protect Amhara lives against these two Amhara-killing terror groups. Fast forward to today, and the OLA and TPLF are Fano's allies, while the biggest killer of Amharas is Fano itself. Meanwhile in the small but heavily militarized northern region of Tigray, a tyrannical insurgency regime has entrenched itself, composed of the most hard-boiled elements of the corrupt and cruel clique that controlled Ethiopia from 1991 to 2018. They have ousted Tigray's more moderate leaders, the ones who signed the Pretoria Peace Agreement and tried to make it work by building trust, but had to flee Tigray for their lives. The Tigrayan hardliners are deeply unpopular and engaged in human trafficking for mercenary work in Sudan, among many other crimes committed in close cooperation with the brutal dictatorship in Eritrea. This has, and this is the brightest light in the darkness, turned most of Tigrayan public opinion against the old guard and for peaceful compromise. In fact, there is now a group of "rebels against the rebels" called the Tigray Peace Force, condemned by some outsiders as "an escalation", but crucial for the hope of Tigrayans freeing Tigray. International news outlets ignore all this, but well-informed diplomats are aware of it, and their response has been much better than in the war in 2020-22. What is hard to stomach is that the diplomats are rather stingy with expressions of solidarity and generous with pacifist sermons. But that's the language of the Western moral superiority complex and the condescending worldwide view of African affairs, which is heavily pushed by big media, including supposedly serious ones like The Economist. If you are interested to know more, I wrote a book about it, and mind you, I am not anti-Western, I just want the West to live up to its own ideals and to apply the same standards to Ethiopia as to their own societies Nevertheless, in the bigger picture, despite years of frustrating bothsidesism from the international community, the rebels are finally getting shunned by most of the diplomacy. It is up to someone like me to help improve mainstream multiethnic Ethiopia's standing in the media battles. Please share.
