One of the first buses to arrive in Houston after Hurricane Katrina was driven by a 20-year-old who had stolen it to help evacuate people from the disaster. The man behind one of the first buses to escape New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina was 20-year-old Jabbar Gibson. On August 31, 2005, as floodwaters engulfed the city and conditions at the Louisiana Superdome deteriorated, Gibson found an abandoned school bus with the keys still inside. Instead of waiting for delayed rescue efforts, he took the bus and loaded around 70 stranded people—including children, elderly residents, and families—to get them out of the disaster zone. Driving for nearly seven hours through flooded roads, storm debris, and police checkpoints, Gibson safely reached Houston, Texas. When the bus arrived at the Astrodome, officials initially assumed it was part of an organized government evacuation before discovering Gibson had acted entirely on his own. Although taking the bus was technically illegal, his actions were widely praised, and he was celebrated as a hero for helping save dozens of lives during one of America’s deadliest natural disasters.

A renegade polymath with binoculars and a beard , Bill was invariably funny and occasionally furious . He loved birds and loathed those who harmed them . He was delightfully unpredictable , sparky , smart and at times a bit spiky . Critically he really knew his stuff , and his passion was true - he didn’t just pick up his binoculars on telly , he went birding whenever he could . So he was genuine and that’s why we loved him , he never needed a script , and took scant interest in any he was given . He didn’t like rules and often neglected to play by them . This may have frustrated the serious and the worthy but it always amused his audience - he was an utter joy to be with . I recall finding a Black Woodpecker in a damp Dutch park with him once , he gazed at it intently , sighed , put down his bins , turned to me and just smiled . A massive grin . No words , just a beautiful childlike bliss . That says all you need to know about Bill Oddie . Sadly we’ve not only lost a goodie , we’ve lost one of the besties .

Today marked one month since I became Prime Minister. Cutting tax on electricity bills. Capping bus fares at £2 in England. Making subscriptions easier to cancel. Cracking down on fake discounts. Supporting farmers affected by the drought. Cutting business rates for pubs, clubs, and music venues. Shutting down 13 more asylum hotels. Giving mayors a share of income tax. Extending the 16-17 Saver Railcard. Bringing buses in the West Midlands under public control. Fast-tracking new homes near train stations. Cleaning up illegal waste dumps. Giving communities and councils more power over what opens on their high street. Opening No10 North. Giving disabled people 24/7 free bus travel. Delivering the biggest transfer of power, funding and responsibility from Westminster in a generation. It's a start, but I’m not complacent. I know that people need more and I promise that I will do everything I can to make yours and your family’s lives better. We're doing things differently to give people more breathing space and bring back hope. Here’s to the next month.

For years, communities have been left to live alongside mountains of illegally dumped waste while criminal gangs profit. It’s just not right. So we’re cleaning up some of the worst sites in the country. But we’re not just cleaning up after the criminals, we’re going after them. More officers, stronger powers, and much bigger fines. These places have been ignored for too long. Not anymore.

No matter who wins the continuing front page PR battle as to who is the most discriminated against group on the planet, globally "Misogyny-driven lethal violence against women and girls results in a significantly higher absolute number of annual deaths than racism, antisemitism, homophobia, or ableism". The lethal War Against Women continues. The clearly intentional refusal to focus on that detail continues. Claims that it's mainly in other countries with other religions is just another example of us, men, globally letting ourselves off the hook. The evidence is hidden in plain sight. The in our faces fact conveniently never makes it to the front page. Fact check or just shrug and walk on by. Ask in your browser, "Is it true that misogyny results in a significantly higher absolute number of annual deaths than racism, antisemitism, homophobia, or ableism?" It's easy to do and then check on how that is reflected in the media (overwhelmingly owned by men). And who is responsible for this deadly war against The Female? Clearly: The Male. But we guys don't have to worry. We have a get-out. Collective responsibility is vehemently rejected, globally. So we don't have to worry. We can continue with, "None of us individually can be blamed, and "I don't personally behave like that". Don't worry, those self-serving mantras will never die. On the other hand we could demand those figures take their rightful place on the daily front pages and news-casts and social media outlets and as a result, rightly, in all our minds. #TheWarAgainstWomen #misogyny #murder #racism #antisemitism #homophobia #ableism #Public Relations
