    The IAEA has been informed that the 330 kV Ferosplavna-1 power line at the Zaporizhzhya NPP – the plant’s only remaining off-site power line - was disconnected at 00:44 local time today resulting in a new loss of off-site power. The location of the damage to the line was preliminarily assessed to be on the northern bank of the Dnipro River. An attempt to reconnect the line manually was unsuccessful and, due to ongoing military activity, technicians are currently unable to determine the cause of the outage. Emergency diesel generators automatically started up to power the plants vital safety systems. The IAEA team at the plant continues to assess the situation. Each loss of off-site power underscores the extremely fragile nuclear safety and security situation at the ZNPP, said DG @rafaelmgrossi, repeating his call for maximum restraint and protection of the plant’s external power supply.

The ZNPP Director informed the IAEA team that the explosion caused 16 casualties among staff and subcontractors, including one death and three serious injuries, describing it as the worst event the plant has faced.     Another IAEA-brokered localized ceasefire has taken effect to enable power line repairs necessary for the restoration of off-site power to the Zaporizhzhya NPP after a long outage, DG @rafaelmgrossi announced today. Due to military activity on the northern side of the Dnipro River, the plant lost the connection to its sole remaining power line - the 330 kilovolt Ferosplavna-1 - on 20 August. Since then, the ZNPP has depended on emergency diesel generators to cool its six reactors and spent fuel pools. The plant is now running low on diesel fuel reserves and faces a possible station blackout within days unless off-site power is restored or more fuel reserves can be transported to the site, located in an active war zone. Under the temporary ceasefire around the damaged power line, Ukrainian technicians will begin power line repairs later today following demining of the area, DG Grossi said, adding that both sides had been engaging constructively with the IAEA for the sake of nuclear safety and security. An IAEA team will monitor the repairs during the ceasefire, the 7th that DG Grossi has negotiated as part of efforts to help prevent a nuclear accident during the conflict.
