🌿「雑草は栄養を奪う」「害虫は殺さなければならない」こう思っていませんか？ 僕が農業を始めた頃はこのように思っていました。植えた作物以外の草や虫は徹底的に殺し排除して管理する。これが一般的だと思います。 しかし、僕はこれとは真逆のことをしています。除草剤は使用しません。雑草は殺さない。残すべきものは残します。殺虫剤を使って虫は殺しません。 周りの農家からは「管理されていない草だらけの畑」と思われるかもしれませんが、僕は自分の草が沢山生えている圃場を自信を持ってお見せできます。逆に緑肥の種をまいて草を生やしているくらいです。 こんなに自信を持ってお見せできる理由は、長年悩まされてきた虫食いや病の被害がなくなったからです。さらに土壌流亡もしなくなり、条件不利地が良い土地に生まれ変わり近年問題となっている異常気象にも強い畑になったのです！ だから僕は草は大好きです。敵視せず、共生する方が農薬代や人件費や化学肥料代やあらゆる経費がかからなくなるので、農業経営としても食の安全としても良いと思うからです。 あんなに頑張って草や虫を排除していたのが無駄だったとさえ思ってしまいます。人間は自分の都合で自然を操作し、殺しすぎて難しくなっているのかもしれません。 【自然に戻って考えてみる】 僕が農薬を使用しなくても虫食いや病の被害に遭わなくなったのは、考え方を変えてからです。現代の農業は人間の都合で虫や草を敵視し徹底的に排除します。 農薬を使用することで草を殺し、病の予防をしています。農業経営では売上が自分の生活に直結するため、このような選択をするのは当たり前だと思います。 しかし、あまりにも予防しよう。殺して排除しようとしすぎたあまり、逆に空回りしているように思うのです。 近年の北海道の大規模農業では、異常気象や農薬に効かない抵抗性を持った虫や草が繁茂していることが問題になっています。 農薬が効かない。という状態になるのです。農家は農薬ローテションという技術を使い、なるべく虫や草が抵抗性を持たないようにしますが、やはり少しずつ進行しているのでしょう。 こうなれば農薬メーカーの新種の農薬の開発を待つか、政府による基準値の緩和を待つしかありません。農薬で排除できなかった部分は人件費が増えるなど、農業経営を圧迫させています。 さらに近年激化する国際情勢の中、日本は化学肥料の100％が輸入頼り。世界的な人口爆発による需要増加や日本経済の低迷に肥料の値上がりは止まりません。また来年も上がる予定です。 これによって農家の倒産件数は過去最多を連続で記録し続け、全国から農家は減り、条件不利地は耕作放棄となり、全体的な耕作面積が減るという食料安全保障の問題にもなっています。 僕は、現場でこの永遠に続く悪循環を見てきた中でいつも現代農業に疑問があります。 確かに、農薬を使用し安定供給することは必要ですが、それ以上に農業経営の負担が増えることや、環境や自然に対する負荷が大きければ今だけのものになってしまいます。 そこで排除から共生へ。農薬を使用せず種をまき、草を生やし、耕す行為を最小限に留め、微生物を守り、自然を守る方へ変えていきました。 その結果、あれだけ悩んでいた虫や病の被害は消えました。そして何より経費が大幅に減ったため、農業経営はとても良くなり、時間も増え、毎日が夏休みとなりました。 人間はいまだに土の1gも作ることはできませんし、土や微生物は解明されていない部分が多いのも事実です。 排除から共生へ、この農業の形を、農家という職業の立場で確立し安定供給出来ることを証明し、食の安全や環境破壊を少しでも止めたいのが僕の今の切なる願いです。 人間は偉くなったように思いますが、それでも食物連鎖の中にいて、日々他の命をいただきながら命を繋いでいます。そんな沢山の生命に感謝し、排除から共生へ変えていく北海道知床から僕の挑戦です 圭吾 https://t.co/idzTsNsK34
