Dinlenmeye fırsat bulamadan, gece gündüz demeden Haymana tepelerine doğru yürüyen yorgun askerler… 105 yıl önce bugün, 23 Ağustos 1921’de, Sakarya’da 22 gün 22 gece sürecek ölüm kalım savaşımız işte böyle başladı. Bu nasıl bir savaştı? Yaklaşık 102 bin kişilik Türk ordusu ile 124 bine yaklaşan Yunan kuvveti, Ankara’nın Polatlı ve Haymana ilçeleri arasında, Sakarya Irmağı’nın doğusunda karşı karşıya geldi. Savaş 100 kilometre genişliğinde, 25 kilometre derinliğe ulaşan olağanüstü büyük bir alana yayıldı. Tek bir cephe çizgisinde yapılmadı. Tepe tepe, mevzi mevzi, köy köy, adım adım sürdü. Bir tepe kaybedildiğinde savaş bitmiyor, gerideki başka bir tepede yeniden savunma kuruluyordu. “Hattı müdafaa yoktur, sathı müdafaa vardır. O satıh bütün vatandır.” sözü işte tam bunu anlatıyordu: Savunulan şey yalnızca bir siper ya da bir çizgi değildi. O tepelerin, köylerin ve yolların tamamıydı. Kısacası bütün vatandı. Sakarya başladığında Kütahya, Eskişehir ve Afyon kaybedilmişti. Ordumuz yok edilmemek için Sakarya’nın doğusuna çekilmişti, Yunan ordusu Ankara’ya yaklaşık 70 kilometre kadar yaklaşmıştı. Meclisin ve hükûmetin Kayseri’ye taşınması konuşuluyordu. Sakarya Savaşı yoksul bir ülkenin, yoksul bir ordunun Tekâlif-i Milliye emirleriyle Anadolu halkının elinde kalan son imkânları da ordusuyla paylaşması ile verilen bir savaş oldu. Ordu köylünün ekmeğiyle, kağnısıyla, hayvanıyla, giyeceğiyle; Anadolu insanının elinde avucunda ne varsa ortaya koymasıyla ayakta duruyordu. Ankara, Sovyet Rusya ile Moskova Antlaşması’nı henüz beş ay önce imzalamıştı. İngiliz siyasetinin desteğini arkasına alan Yunan ordusu Ankara’ya doğru ilerliyordu. Batum’daki Enver Paşa ve İttihatçı çevreler de Ankara’nın yenilmesi ile ortaya çıkacak iktidar boşluğuna göre hesap yapıyordu. Savaşın bedeli çok ağır oldu. 5.713 askerimiz şehit düştü, 18.480 askerimiz yaralandı. Esir ve kayıplarla birlikte, firarlar hariç toplam muharebe zayiatımız 33.654 kişiye ulaştı. Subay kayıpları öylesine yüksekti ki Sakarya, “Subay Muharebesi” diye de anıldı. 13 Eylül 1921’e gelindiğinde Sakarya Irmağı’nın doğusunda Yunan kuvveti kalmamıştı. Yunan ordusu bütünüyle yok edilemedi ama Ankara’ya ilerleme ve saldırıyı sürdürme gücünü kaybetti. 1919’dan beri devam eden geri çekiliş burada durdu. Savaşın yönü değişti; artık yalnızca direnmek değil, hazırlanmak ve vatanı bütünüyle kurtaracak Büyük Taarruz’u gerçekleştirmek için imkan doğdu. Zaferin ardından uluslararası dengeler hemen değişti. Ruslar ikircikli tutumdan çıktılar 13 Ekim’de Kars Antlaşması imzalandı. 20 Ekim’de Fransa ile Ankara Antlaşması yapıldı; Güney Cephesi kapandı, Fransa Ankara Hükûmeti’ni tanıdı ve düşman İtilaf devletleri birliği parçalandı. Bütün bunların arkasında ise Polatlı’da trenden indirilen, bir dakika bile dinlenemeden Haymana tepelerine doğru yürüyen yorgun insanlar vardı. Yoksuldular, uykusuzdular; arkalarında bekleyen aileleri, önlerinde bütün bir ülkenin geleceği vardı. Sakarya Meydan Muharebesi’nin başlamasının 105. yılında; bağımsızlığımızı, Ankara’yı ve henüz kurulmamış Cumhuriyet’e giden yolu canlarıyla savunan bütün askerlerimizi saygıyla anıyorum. Başta Mustafa Kemal Atatürk olmak üzere Millî Mücadele’nin bütün komutanlarını, askerlerini ve elinde avucunda ne varsa ordusuyla paylaşan Anadolu halkını hürmetle selamlıyorum.
