EXPRESIDENTES DE COSTA RICA ATENDIMOS A MISIÓN SOBRE LIBERTAD DE PRENSA Con ocasión de la visita a Costa Rica de la Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) y del Comité de Protección de Periodistas (CPJ) para evaluar la situación de la libertad de expresión y de prensa en el país, los expresidentes de la República atendimos conjuntamente la solicitud de entrevista de su misión y brindamos nuestros criterios. La presencia de la SIP y la CPJ en nuestro territorio debe ser motivo de reflexión y preocupación. Costa Rica, históricamente reconocida por sus altos estándares de libertad de prensa, ha sido incorporada en años recientes a la labor de monitoreo de estas organizaciones internacionales ante las preocupantes señales de deterioro en esta materia. Entre ellas se encuentran medidas administrativas que buscan la asfixia financiera de medios de comunicación, restricciones al acceso a la información pública, uso injustificado del “secreto de Estado”, así como el trato estigmatizante hacia medios y periodistas y el hostigamiento digital contra comunicadores y creadores de contenido críticos del gobierno. Compartimos estas preocupaciones y consideramos nuestro deber contribuir al trabajo de la SIP y la CPJ. Por ello, hacemos un llamado a las autoridades, a los medios de comunicación y a la sociedad civil a facilitar su misión y a garantizarle plena apertura y transparencia. La libertad de prensa es un derecho ciudadano y un pilar esencial de nuestra democracia. Defenderla es defender a Costa Rica.
