What an absolute hoot! Had tons of anvil sized fun seeing COYOTE VS. ACME at the cinema just now. It's genuinely one of the best and most timely films made by a studio I've seen all year, which makes its labyrinthine path to the screen even more ironic and inspiring. So well made, smartly written and with a gag every 3 seconds, it's a brilliant tribute to Looney Tunes legends Chuck Jones, Tex Avery and Michael Maltese. Five big sticks of dynamite from me. Don't miss!

Ten years ago, I discovered a 700-strong list on @MUBI entitled ‘Edgar Wright’s Favorite Movies’, which came as something of a surprise, as I hadn’t written it. Though the American spelling of ‘favourite’ was a clue. The list had been created by Sam DiSalle, so I reached out to ask how he had compiled it. He explained that it included every film I had ever said I liked in interviews, articles and polls. I asked if I could edit it and, over the next few months, after much addition and subtraction, gave him enough further suggestions to bring the grand total up to a round 1,000 films. Every now and then I update it and thought I would do so ten years on. It is a very personal and entirely subjective selection of favourites from more than 100 years of cinema. Some people get extremely riled up about films they perceive to be ‘missing’, so please be warned: any comments along the lines of “What, no…?” will be deleted. It’s only one person’s list, and the great news is you can absolutely make your own. In fact, I encourage you to! I enjoy keeping the list fluid for my own pleasure, amusement and reference. I’m sharing a recently updated version in the hope that you’ll have fun poring over it and diving into some films you haven’t seen, or perhaps haven’t even heard of. I should also apologise to my friends at @1000filmsblog for adding and removing titles. I really don’t mean to increase your workload! Anything that has ever appeared on the list remains valid; I simply like to cycle films in and out according to rewatches and new discoveries. And, of course, enormous thanks to Sam DiSalle for helping me put it all together and maintain it over the years. Links to his MUBI and @letterboxd versions of the list are below. Film-watching is a lifetime pursuit, and there are still so many others out there for me to see. I hope these two lists are a great place to for you to start. Please give my regards to your eyeballs!

I really enjoyed 'Backrooms'. Imaginative, hypnotic and cryptic in a purely pleasurable way. Saw it with a full house, 9pm on a Sunday night. It's different from 'The Blair Witch Project' but I was reminded of seeing that film on its opening weekend and, similarly, how you could hear a pin drop in a packed house. Great to see young filmmakers and new horror movies keeping the big-screen experience in rude health. Bring it on.

I am very heartened by the news that Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome and the former ArcLight multiplex are set to reopen, like a phoenix from the ashes. I spent so much time there during my years in Los Angeles and was deeply saddened when it closed in 2020. Today it was announced that @alamodrafthouse, in partnership with Sony Pictures, will restore and reopen the legendary Cinerama Dome under its original name and branding, while the former ArcLight Hollywood complex will become the 14-screen Alamo Drafthouse Hollywood. Congratulations to Sony head honcho Tom Rothman and Drafthouse owner Tim League for leading the charge. I have a long history with the Cinerama Dome and the ArcLight. All my movies from 'Shaun of the Dead' through 'Baby Driver' played at the Dome, and the complex was consistently the highest-grossing theater for my films. I had some very memorable Q&As there (including a rather tipsy one for 'Hot Fuzz') as well as a premiere and a Cornetto Trilogy marathon for 'The World’s End', and a whole weekend of appearances when 'Baby Driver opened'. Were you at any of them? Driving past the site over the last few years has been really sad. It felt like an open wound for the moviegoing community, so I’m thrilled that it will return and join the newly thriving theatrical scene in Los Angeles. I also have to give huge kudos to @SaveYourCinema, who has campaigned tirelessly for the Cinerama Dome and the ArcLight to reopen. He never gave up, and I am guessing he is extremely happy and proud this morning.

Am so sad to read that Bill Oddie has passed away. Although he later became equally famous as the BBC’s resident ornithologist, he had been a comedy hero of mine since my earliest days of watching television, as one of 'The Goodies'. The show was hugely influential on me: its glorious, go-for-broke silliness, almost like a kids’ companion to Monty Python, made it one of my earliest comedic touchstones. I loved Bill’s anarchic energy, musical brilliance and willingness to do absolutely anything for a laugh. And, it must be said, as the shortest member of the trio, he spoke to me. 'The Goodies' was always part of a direct line for me, from 'The Monkees', to 'Monty Python's Flying Circus', to 'The Young Ones', right up to our own 'Spaced', in terms of the wild freedom of the television format. I’ll never forget the giddy thrill of watching this opening sequence as a kid (the theme sung by Bill himself), and the resulting rush of total absurdity filling the box. Farewell to a true Goodie. RIP.
