Order CBI inquiry into the fake Encounter of 3 Tamils in the Karnataka forest & ₹1 crore compensation each for the families! The Karnataka Forest Department’s alleged brutal shooting and killing of three local Tamils in a forest area adjoining the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary in Chamarajanagar district, Karnataka, on the false allegation that they were hunting deer is condemnable. I express my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of the three men who were killed. The three men killed by Karnataka forest officials—Antony Sami, Johnrose Peter, and Kumar—were residents of Jagannathathotti, Mariyamangalam, and Lasarthotti villages respectively. While the three men were not involved in any kind of illegal activity, forest guards from the Sakya area forest office brutally shot and killed them. To cover up the killings, the Forest Department has claimed that the three had come to hunt deer and were shot dead in a confrontation with forest officials. However, the victims’ families have alleged that this is an outright lie. The three men who were killed were originally from Tamil Nadu. Around 100 years ago, when land was acquired for the construction of the Mettur Dam, they lost their homes and belongings and migrated to the Mariyamangalam area of Chamarajanagar district in Karnataka in search of a livelihood. There is no evidence that the men were hunting deer in the Mariyamangalam forest area or that an exchange of firing took place between the two sides. The claim that the deceased were carrying firearms is also untrue. Tensions have risen in the area as local residents are protesting against the killing of the Tamils. Puttaranga Shetty, the Congress MLA from the Chamarajanagar constituency and district in-charge minister, and Manjunath, the JD(S) MLA from Hanur, have questioned why there was a need for an encounter in the early hours of the morning. Human rights activists have also condemned the actions of the Forest Department. As conflicting reports have emerged regarding the shooting deaths of the Tamils, Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has stated that a magistrate’s inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the truth. However, the truth will not emerge through this inquiry. A CBI investigation must be ordered into the matter. I urge Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay to condemn the killings of the Tamils and ensure that the Karnataka government provides compensation of ₹1 crore each to the families of the three victims. @CMofKarnataka @CMOTamilnadu

Are the CPI and CPM Banned Parties? Action Must Be Taken Against the Tahsildar Who Ordered the Collection of Details of Party Members! It is shocking that Ayyasamy, the Tahsildar of Guziliamparai Taluk in Dindigul district, has ordered revenue officials to collect, within a few hours, details of members and office-bearers of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] in all the revenue villages under Guziliamparai Taluk and submit them to the Tahsildar’s office. The Tahsildar’s decision to collect the details of Communist Party office-bearers and members, without citing any reason and treating them like criminals, is condemnable. Even before Independence, when certain political parties were banned, and during the Emergency, collecting details of political party members through lower-level officials was a practice used by those in power to prevent political parties from protesting against the government. The fact that a Tahsildar has resorted to the same unlawful tactic once used by the British and other authoritarian regimes amounts to an abuse of official power and cannot be tolerated. Communist Party members have committed no offence that warrants the collection of their personal details. Condemning the unilateral and anti-people actions of the concerned Tahsildar, the Communist Party (Marxist) had announced that it would hold a protest tomorrow by laying siege to the Guziliamparai Tahsildar’s office. It is only because the Tahsildar could not tolerate the Communist Party announcing a protest against him that he has unleashed such repression. What is even more disturbing is that a copy of the circular issued by the Guziliamparai Tahsildar yesterday afternoon was also sent to the Dindigul District Collector and the Revenue Divisional Officer of Palani, among other officials. Yet, even after seeing the circular, these senior officials did not come forward either to condemn the Tahsildar’s excessive action or to take action against him. Under the Constitution of India, political parties have the right to work and campaign for the welfare and rights of the people. A Tahsildar has no authority to take away that right or threaten political parties for exercising it; nor does the State Government possess such authority. The Tamil Nadu Government must take strict legal action against Guziliamparai Tahsildar Ayyasamy for engaging in such an act of intimidation against members of the Communist parties, without forgetting these constitutional principles. I strongly urge the Tamil Nadu Government to take appropriate legal action against the Tahsildar. @CMOTamilnadu
