There are so many people from Chennai who regularly go to Tirupati for Lord Venkateswara darshan. Good news for them. The Tamil Nadu government is planning a 22 kilometre elevated corridor from Padi to Thirunindravur. This would become the state’s longest elevated road. Once the project is complete, it could take just 90 minutes to reach Tirupati from Chennai.

Got an invite from Rajya Sabha MP Praveen Chakravarty for a freewheeling chat. Met him at his home. Was surprised to learn that he has relocated to Chennai from Delhi. He is extremely passionate about Tamil Nadu’s growth and progress. Felt really good when I stepped out of his home after the meeting.

A terrible and tragic flash flood has taken place at Gyirong in Tibet - China, and one of our Kailash groups was caught in it. While on their way back, they were at the immigration office when the flood occurred and the building and much of the town seems to have been flooded. All of us, including the volunteers and support teams are deeply anguished and are doing our utmost to assist in the rescue. There has been no official information on the whereabouts of any of the people who were at the immigration office. We are working with the authorities to see if we can get to the location and stand ready to be part of the rescue efforts, regardless of the risk involved. Of the 21 groups who are part of our Sojourn, 495 people have already returned safely. 743 people are currently in Tibet, 148 people are in Nepal, and 77 people were at the immigration center, and 3 volunteers in Timure, Nepal. To the families and loved ones of those in our group and hundreds of others who are affected in the region, I share your pain and we are sparing no effort during this profoundly difficult time. It is encouraging that Andhra Pradesh is prioritising even a place like Kuppam for a new airport. Vellore in Tamil Nadu is far larger than Kuppam and holds significant potential, yet the state has shown little focus on making its airport operational. Despite years of announcements, the facility remains non operational with no commercial flights taking off. When it comes to infrastructure, especially airports, the political class in Tamil Nadu has comprehensively failed. It is surprising that this long standing issue has never received the sustained attention and priority it deserves.

Vellore has huge potential in education, healthcare, and tourism. Even the Delhi Chief Minister’s son recently graduated from Vellore. Why are we simply not focusing on making the existing airport in Vellore operational? Besides upgrading the current airport in Chennai and building a second one, it is high time the state government started working with the Centre on the entire air infrastructure in Tamil Nadu. The whole issue needs a complete relook. Tamil Nadu is now ready to launch rockets from Kulasekarapattinam. So we need to come down a little and focus on air travel too.

Anyone who says Chennai is doomed, please read this. The more I research, the more I’m impressed with our manufacturing capabilities. This post is based on reading a few news portals. India is breaking free from Chinese dependence on Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). These giant machines dig tunnels for metros, high speed rail and highways. Delays on Chinese sourced machines for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train exposed the risk of relying on foreign supply chains. Germany’s Herrenknecht has been in Chennai since 2007. This is India’s only full scale TBM facility. It has already built or refurbished over 40 machines and is now expanding in North Chennai, doubling capacity. The Centre is backing this with a $1.2 billion incentive scheme over seven years to attract $1.8 billion in investment, set local value addition targets, and boost domestic manufacturing of TBMs and other advanced equipments. Chennai stands to gain most - more jobs, technology, a stronger supplier base, faster projects, and a chance to turn India from importer into a future exporter of these critical machines.

H-1B would cost around Rs. 1 crore henceforth, and we don’t even know who will all get it. Two decades ago, being sent onsite was a demand made by potential employees even during interviews. The marriage market was extremely favourable to NRIs compared with resident Indians. This is how life works. Everything has a beginning and an end. It is not wise to extrapolate today’s situation forever. I’m confident that talented people will still find opportunities, even in India itself. I’m highlighting this issue just to convey that nothing lasts forever. Absolutely nothing.
