SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT… Dear @daddyhope I am making this response out of turn with my usual approach not to engage individuals personally. I last spoke to you in 2022, soon after the death of Dr. Alex Magaisa. We stopped talking after there had been a leaked audio in which you and the unidentified intelligence operative, were gratuitously attacking me without basis or reason and through lies, when you had direct and full access to me. I therefore saw no reason in continuing to trust you. Since then you have been on a hateful smear campaign, devoting your time to paint me a monster and less than wise. Your post earlier follows a series of other like-sounding character assignations and malicious attacks. A line has been consistently crossed, whereby all manner of false narratives have been manufactured to damage and harm my standing , even where the verifiable truth suggests and informs otherwise. I make the following submissions, on the various wild assertions, with the sole intent of putting to bed these sideshows, distractions, and allow us to focus our attention on citizens’ struggles where it is needed most. My focus is on fighting for freedom, transformation, a Citizens Republic and a Citizens government in our life. The following are falsehoods that have been peddled and the lies conceived or concocted by haters. 1. I am a champion of structured and organized grassroots movement outfits having successfully founded and formed MDC, MDC ALLIANCE and CCC. It is simply not true that I am averse to structured politics. My record within the democratic movement says it all. I am part of a proud history of forming strong movements which have defeated dictatorship to the point of them now attempting to ban elections. Which other movements on the continent have been as strong electorally, as MDC, MDC-A and CCC? Check my involvement in all three? I am fully aware of how you achieve results. A movement is not just a name. A movement is an idea, a strategy, a structure, it’s about collective leadership, its team effort, its energizing the base, it’s an organized approach, but above all, an ability to evolve and survive, uncompromised. You do not organize effectively as we did, and win elections successively as we did, without a plan, method, a structure, and a strategy. If it were that easy and straightforward, everyone would be able to do it. 2. I’m a proud team player. It is NOT TRUE that the CCC was a “one man band.” CCC is in the local government, National Assembly and Senate. So how does CCC become a “one-man band” when it is represented across these arms of government and state, yet the ‘one man’, yours truly, is not not even part of the band? It’s just outright malice! You say I made myself President and deliberately built CCC around myself. That is false and malicious. CCC organically emerged from broad consultations we made across the length and breadth of Zimbabwe, prior to its formation. The citizens i consulted nationwide gave a mandate to spearhead the then new baby as a response to the hijacking of the MDC Alliance upon ED machinations. We went out into the countryside with three questions: i. What do we do with the fact that the court has taken away the party name, and the party from us? ii. Do we continue to participate in disputed elections without reforms ? iii. How do we select candidates, Presidential, MPs and Councillors? The responses from the citizens informed how we behaved thereafter, and up to this day. How does a “one man band” attract over 2 million votes and be able to organize and support candidates in different communities all over Zimbabwe? As a matter of verifiable fact, the CCC had organs such as the Citizens National Assembly, which met and made binding decisions which I was also bound to, even in instances where I was of a different political or strategic view. My concern is @kizzabesigye1’s health and life. I demand that his right to health be respected. Let me bring him home to Geneva for proper medical care. When he recovers, he will return and defend himself in court. Returning a very weak man to an airless, dark, bedbug-infested cell and denying him family care is cruel and a violation of his human rights. #BREAKINGNEWS The mother and two sisters of Kelsea Tadiwa Tafirenyika, the 22-year-old second wife of Collins Mnangagwa, a son of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, were arrested in Bulawayo yesterday and remain in custody. Kelsea was arrested on August 4 and charged with possession of drugs. She was granted US$1,000 bail by the High Court today, however news coming from sources at Chikurubi prison say there is an instruction to arrest her again tonight before she is released. According to reliable sources, Collins Mnangagwa’s mother-in-law, Amina Jassinta Jessub Arab, was abducted at Coke Corner in Harare at about noon on Thursday, August 13. She was driving home to Sunningdale after attending court, where her daughter had been denied bail. The sources said Amina was taken to One Commando Barracks and questioned about US$4 million that her interrogators claimed belonged to Collins Mnangagwa. During the interrogation, water was allegedly poured over her covered face and she was beaten with sticks and batons. Her interrogators reportedly told her that she would be punished if she failed to produce the money. The sources said she fainted repeatedly but was forced back onto her feet so that the interrogation could continue. Amina was reportedly later taken to State House and handed over to the First Lady, Auxillia Mnangagwa, who allegedly assaulted her while demanding the money and title deeds to properties registered in Kelsea’s name. Kelsea is pregnant with Collins Mnangagwa’s twins. The sources said the First Lady shouted: “Waisa mwana wangu muhari, mubudise,” meaning: “You bewitched my son, remove the curse.” She also allegedly ordered Amina to stay away from her son and threatened that, if Kelsea were released from prison, she would send people to cut open her stomach so that her unborn babies would die. The First Lady allegedly demanded that Amina surrender all the title deeds and return her son’s money. Amina was reportedly taken back to One Commando Barracks before eventually being released. The family subsequently sought refuge in Bulawayo. Sources said Amina and her daughters were arrested at a lodge yesterday and charged with possession of drugs, which they maintain were planted on them. Sources close to the case said Kelsea’s initial arrest followed the alleged leaking of a video in which Collins appeared worse for wear. One of Zimbabwe’s retired military generals opposed to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term extension, Air Marshal Muchena, has released these visuals to the media showing State security officers pursuing him and his wife wherever they go for days. Air Marshal Muchena previously met with President Mnangagwa and expressed his opposition to the term-extension legislation, then known as CAB3. President Mnangagwa abruptly ended the meeting with the words: “Whoever wins, let them win.” The apparent surveillance of a retired senior military officer and his wife exposes the use of political intimidation and the abuse of State security institutions to silence opposition voices. Disagreeing with a constitutional amendment should not be a crime. The irony of a retired general being relentlessly pursued by State security agents is striking. As a young boy, he went to war to help liberate the country, returned home and helped build the military establishment that is now being used to hound him and his family. He fought to free Zimbabwe, only to find himself being persecuted by the very State he helped create. If a whole general can be hounded like this, what of an ordinary citizen?

We have consistently made the point that the role of the democratic movement since 1999 cannot be reduced to the simple objective of taking power from ZANU-PF. For many and indeed for millions of ordinary citizens the democratic movement represents something much deeper, a vehicle for the oppressed, a platform through which ordinary citizens can find full political expression, resist authoritarian consolidation, defend our zones of autonomy and gravitate towards a democratic breakthrough. It is in this context that calls for a genuinely democratic movement are both legitimate and understandable. The regime has repeatedly demonstrated zero appetite for any reform while intensifying its assault on the foundations of our constitutional democracy. This reality places a huge responsibility on those of us who represent the fight for democratic change. We owe it to the millions of dejected citizens to build a political home in which they can organise, find expression, and reject the regime in Harare. But achieving that requires us to take stock and to do so we need the courage to confront reality as it is, rather than as we wish it to be. It requires honest reflection, rigorous analysis of the political terrain, and the humility to learn, adapt and act. History will judge us not merely by the intentions we profess, but by whether we were capable of rising to the demands of our moment. It places us with a choice, that is either to become an albatross around the neck of democratic change, or to rebuild ourselves into the instrument of democratic transformation that millions of our people desperately need.

This is the moment Zambia’s opposition leader, Brian Mundubile, who has accused Zambian strongman Hakainde Hichilema of rigging the 13 August presidential election, was arrested by police alongside fellow opposition figure Makebi Zulu. On Monday, Hichilema shut down the courts, preventing Mundubile from physically filing a petition challenging the disputed election result. His regime also killed a former Cabinet minister last week, just hours after the opposition protested the suspension of vote counting and the announcement of results. This leaves South Africa, Botswana Lesotho, Malawi and Namibia as the only remaining democracies in mainland Southern Africa where elections are conducted freely and fairly and the will of the people is respected, and those aggrieved have access to courts.
