I feel honoured to have had the privilege, as Chairman of the Awards Committee, of nominating for the Nishan-e-Imtiaz two remarkable doctors, a physician and a radiologist, both members of Bombay’s Parsi community, who faithfully guarded the secret of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s terminal illness. Many historians regard this as one of the most consequential secrets of the twentieth century. Lord Mountbatten later acknowledged that, had he known how seriously ill Jinnah was, he might have delayed Partition—potentially altering the course of history and perhaps even jeopardising the creation of Pakistan. By maintaining absolute professional confidentiality at such a critical moment, these doctors performed a quiet but extraordinary service. Their fidelity to their professional oath inadvertently became a significant contribution to the circumstances that made the creation of Pakistan possible. The third Nishan-e-Imtiaz was for Muhammad Asad, the distinguished European-born Islamic scholar who converted from Judaism to Islam. He developed a close intellectual association with Allama Iqbal, embraced Pakistan as his home, and rendered exceptional intellectual and diplomatic service to the newly established state. He was among the earliest recipients of a Pakistani passport and later represented Pakistan at the United Nations. His celebrated English translation and commentary on the Qur’an, The Message of the Qur’an, remains an enduring contribution to contemporary Islamic thought. These are remarkable but insufficiently remembered chapters of our national history. The stories of these individuals their integrity, scholarship and service deserve to be revived, documented and shared with a new generation. In honouring them, we also preserve the memory of those whose contributions to the making and early years of Pakistan were profound, even if they were made away from the spotlight.
