Security Crackdown on Matsadaash Escalates as 2 More Journalists Are Arrested, Bringing Total to 4 In a further escalation, security authorities arrested journalists Islam Barakat and Mohamed Adel, both editors at Matsadaash, on the evening of Tuesday, September 29. Their mobile phones and personal laptops were seized, and during one of the raids, security forces also damaged household contents and personal belongings. These successive arrests are a matter of grave concern, particularly as no clear reasons have been provided for the detention of any of the four journalists. No official information has been made available regarding their whereabouts or the authorities responsible for investigating them. The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), under the direction of Hossam Bahgat, is providing legal representation for all members of the Matsadaash team. Matsadaash is an independent Egyptian journalism platform that operates openly. Its journalists are carrying out their professional duty: investigating and verifying information, establishing and reporting facts, and serving the public interest in accordance with professional journalistic standards and the rights to freedom of opinion, journalism, and publication guaranteed by the Egyptian Constitution.
