On 3 August 2014, ISIS launched a genocidal assault against the Yazidi (Êzidî) Kurds of Shengal—an ancient Mesopotamian community that remembers this tragedy as its 74th Ferman. Around 400,000 Yazidis were displaced and approximately 10,000 were killed or abducted. Thousands of women and children were enslaved, trafficked and subjected to systematic violence. Boys were taken to ISIS camps, while girls as young as nine reportedly endured rape and sexual enslavement. The catastrophe was intensified by abandonment. Despite the presence of thousands of armed personnel, forces responsible for protecting Shengal reportedly withdrew as ISIS advanced, leaving much of the population defenceless. More than a decade later, approximately 2,700 Yazidis remain missing. Their families are still waiting for answers, while survivors continue to carry wounds that justice has yet to heal. The Yazidi story, however, is not only one of persecution. It is also a story of resistance, survival and an unbreakable determination to exist. The missing must be found.
