Mi esposo, el expresidente de la República Abdalá Bucaram Ortiz, ha tenido que ser intervenido de emergencia de su corazón luego de días de enorme tensión y fuertes emociones. Su estado de salud es delicado, de carácter reservado, y actualmente permanece bajo estricta vigilancia médica en una unidad de cuidados intensivos. Después de más de cuatro décadas, resulta inevitable preguntarnos hasta dónde se pretende llegar. Cuando la presión sobre un ser humano continúa aun frente al evidente deterioro de su salud, parecería que para algunos ya no se busca justicia, sino su muerte. Lo digo con el dolor de una esposa que contempla a su compañero de vida conectado a equipos médicos y con la angustia de una madre que ha visto cómo esta situación ha golpeado también a sus hijos y a toda su familia. Nos vemos en la dolorosa obligación de publicar estas imágenes íntimas porque pareciera que para ciertos sectores nada es suficiente. ¿Es necesario que ocurra una tragedia irreparable para detenernos y preguntarnos qué estamos haciendo como sociedad? No pedimos privilegios. Pedimos humanidad, debido proceso y justicia sin odio ni persecución. A los medios de comunicación les ruego sensibilidad; a quienes administran justicia, responsabilidad; y a la ciudadanía, independientemente de sus simpatías políticas, que recuerde que detrás del expresidente, del político y del nombre que durante décadas ha generado pasiones y controversias existe un ser humano: un esposo, un padre, un abuelo y un hombre cuya vida merece respeto. Hoy no quiero discutir política ni responder ataques. Quiero algo infinitamente más sencillo: quiero que el hombre que amo regrese vivo a nuestra casa, que vuelva a abrazar a sus hijos y a sus nietos y que podamos continuar caminando juntos después de tantos años.
