Have just arrived the US. These days travel reminds me of who we used to be. When I first traveled to the UK in the early 70s.I did not have to have a visa from Lagos. Our Asian friends still enjoy that privilege. Some of my friends used to finish class on Friday fly overnight to London go shopping on Saturday, party all night, get on a flight on Sunday and be in class on Monday. Which undergrad would contemplate that today. The international community punishes people from countries that have not been well governed. Visa requirement is usually a first test. So when I hear the swag of those who talk about experience I want to remind them that their experience devalued Nigeria.

I cannot breathe . I have just heard that ICPC has ‘uncovered’ another fake agency in government. I need help. When do people resign for extreme wrong doing on their watch? Or is it part of a comprehensive worldview of the state as a criminal enterprise in which the agency function and requirement of agents to account has been thrown overboard, such that reckless impunity can be papered over by small scale propaganda. I laughed many years ago when then Harvard Economist and world Bank consultant Robert Klitgaard wrote the book Tropical Gangsters to describe African leaders. I thought it could never happen in Nigeria. Now I know better. But are we too defeated as a people to do something. As the singer Etc cooed: who will save us now.

Catholic Bishops were told in the Villa that all is fair in politics. So why Did Richard Nixon resign as US President for covering up Wtergate wiretapping. But the statement speaks to a mindset. And mindsets are everything. They depict a worldview. Germans sum it up well in the word Weltanschauung, a complete philosophy of life. As what leadership does most is set the tone of culture we can see the effect of that mindset in the pervasive impunity in the land. My personal experience shows how the citizen in Lagos, for example, is sandwiched between the terror of area boys, LASTMA, and thieves. A driver who drops me at the airport at 7am on Sunday experiences engine overheating near Obalende. Within minutes he is stripped of every kobo on him by area boys within watchful gaze of LASTMA officials near their Sura Centre, As the area boys moved on LASTMA moves in, threaten and then tows the car, extorting nearly 100k, most of which they refused to offer a receipt for. This is now social order collapses when impunity reigns.

Just met a man full of lamentations from spending two days to get to Lagos from the South East of Nigeria, not South East Asia.. The major economic artery roads are almost immotorable. The consequent gridlocks tell of the failure of consequence management in Nigeria and the limits of government by propaganda. Tongue-in-cheek I suggested they should have tried the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. Priorities used to be a key word in planning and budgeting literature. That too may have been flushed down the toilet when Tropical Gangsters rode into town.

When I see how much Nigeria and Nigerians have suffered from poor leadership and so desperately need new ways, then see people I call friends back men whose knees can hardly hold up, and eyes are failing, as are many other internal organs requiring frequent visits to doctors in far away lands, I realize the selfish heart of man is wicked. This is because I know the motive is not love of the man but what they can do for themselves when his body is in power. That many will suffer while they splurge somehow does not show up on their radar.

What makes the trouble of Nigeria more depressing is that it is the story of the betrayal of elite. You see it repeated again and again. In 1993 the Igbo woman in Ogbete market voted for MKO Abiola without being prodded. They knew it was about liberation not ethnicity. But the elite had other calculus. Those who ate with Abiola went to sell him to Abacha. That woman chants for Peter Obi in spite of treacherous Governors. The same can be said of the legislators and defectors. They make silly jokes that who or what money cannot buy more money can buy. And they leave the people hungry and angry

When former Speaker of the US House of Reps, Nancy Pelosi, Pres Barack Obama; etc called on then incumbent President Joe Biden to relinquish secured nomination they performed the patriots heavy lift. Is it lack of patriotism or rabid selfishness that prevents political elders from doing same in Nigeria. .We know cognitive decline kicks in with age. Why do we have term limits. And Retirement ages. Nigeria has paid dearly in lost opportunity for progress from leaders past their prime. I insist on the point I have made for years that nobody older than 70 should seek to run for executive positions like President or Governor. In many ways such bids are disrespectful of a population with the median age of 19 l

When the June 12 crisis came I was one of the first to stand up even though I was a senior Executive in Industry. When 20yrs later someone of my own ethnic stock reminded me that of the 39 of us who signed a published document on June 12 only 3 were not Yoruba I was shocked. I had no recollection Of the number of people who signed the document and their ethnicity. I wondered why anybody would pay attention to such things and not to principles. But I have watched some of those who signed the document go neutral or join in the oppression. Still I do not waiver in prioritizing the dignity of the human person over the size of my bank account or being associated with power no matter what the agents of propane’s write. I am sure they will receive the reward of Goebbels. That reckless sense of priority is the current ruin of us. Nigeria has to build men and women who cannot be bought

Yesterday I was asked on the Arise morning show with Abati and co about election debates. I was glad Rufai Oseni raised the case of South Korea. Quite sad for Nigeria is the fact that an INEC delegation visited South Korea many years ago and were briefed on how debates turned around the politics of South Korea and evidently the economy. It was the commission that institutionalized debates. They have them in school halls, Village squares, on TV and off TV. At an NIIA lecture by Prof Attahiru Jega when he was INEC chairman I asked if he did not think INEC should have done same especially as it was a key learning point of their visit.
