We remain so obsessed with cricket we risk overlooking the hockey equation. India’s 5-3 in Amstelveen completes a decade of complete hockey domination over Pakistan. Undefeated, with 21 games won and two draws. A better way to understand this is the total goals scored for and against in these 23 games. India scored 92 against Pakistan’s 33. We’ve seen many tennis score wins, 7-1 in FIH Pro League, 10-2 in Hangzhou (2023) Asian Games, 6-1 and 7-1 in FIH World League, London (2017). And of course the 5-3 at Amstelveen.

Lt Gen J. F. R. Jacob was more than one of India’s greatest military strategists. He was a proud Indian Jew whose life showed what true belonging looks like. Born into Kolkata’s Baghdadi Jewish community, Jacob served India with distinction from the jungles of Burma to the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971. As Chief of Staff of Eastern Command, he helped shape the campaign that brought the war to a decisive end. On 16 December 1971, he flew to Dhaka and helped secure the surrender of Pakistan’s Eastern Command. Around 90,000 Pakistani personnel laid down their arms. Bangladesh was born. Jacob later served as Governor of Punjab and Goa, and as Administrator of Chandigarh. He never had to choose between his Jewish identity and his Indian patriotism.
