Deeply saddened by the passing of @shefeenahamed K, IPS, IG of Police, CID-CB, Odisha, who lost his battle with cancer this morning in Thiruvananthapuram at just 50. I came to know Shefeen during his deputation to Kerala, when he served as Rural SP of Thiruvananthapuram. He was a thoughtful, unfailingly courteous officer with a fine mind, who wore his competence lightly. A CET graduate and a son of this city, he went on to distinguish himself in Odisha, particularly in cyber crime and the Crime Branch, over more than two decades of service. Though he returned to his home cadre in Odisha, he never quite left Thiruvananthapuram behind, and stayed in touch over the years. That he should be taken from us so young, and in the city he loved, makes this loss all the harder to bear. My heartfelt condolences to his family, his colleagues in the Odisha Police, and all who knew and admired him.

As indicated this morning, I am in Katmandu, where I had traveled for a series of engagements, and have found myself here as Nepal reels from the Bhote-Koshi flash floods. Over 130 Indians are reported missing, among them a number of Malayalis. My thoughts are with every family waiting for news. Since I am on the ground, I have taken the matter up at the highest level available to me here, with our Ambassador and with senior Nepali authorities, and have shared the details of the untraced Malayali travelers compiled by NORKA-Roots and forwarded by the Chief Minister's Office. Took off for Katmandu yesterday, blissfully unaware of the drama that had taken place in the hills and caused such catastrophic damage. A severe, sudden flash flood struck northern Nepal’s Rasuwa district near the Tibet border, causing widespread destruction along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. Global warming and/or an earthquake in Tibet may have caused a large chunk of a glacier to break off and fall into the valley below, experts surmise. Learned on arrival of the loss of life (now confirmed at 160 so far) and the fact that some 2000 or more people are estimated to be missing. Raging floodwaters destroyed at least 19 motorable bridges, washed away roughly 40 km of the Betrawati–Rasuwagadhi highway, and heavily damaged eight operational hydropower projects. I fully support the Indian government’s immediate pledge of relief assistance. Nepal needs all the help it can get. My heart goes out to the victims and their loved ones, who include large numbers of Indian tourists, including a hundred performing the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra. Prayers for the missing; may they be rescued soon. 🙏🏼
