Following a compliance inspection operation, members deployed under #OperationBuyisa seized 100 firearms and ammunition from a security company based in Soweto, Johannesburg, on Saturday, 22/08, for contraventions of the Firearms Control Act, 60 of 2000. According to a preliminary report, the security company's Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) accreditation was recently suspended, whereafter the responsible person failed to dispose of the firearms as required. The compliance inspection further revealed that the company's firearm storage facility does not meet the requirements stipulated in the Act. The seized firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine whether they have been used in the commission of any crimes. The operations, which were intelligence-driven and aimed at disrupting criminal activities while addressing illegal immigration and the trade in illicit goods, were conducted by the same police members following the operationalisation of information received. During the first operation at Ga-Hlahla Village, a 33-year-old male suspect was arrested for the unlawful possession of ammunition and dealing in dagga. Police confiscated six rounds of ammunition, comprising two R5 rifle rounds and four 9mm rounds, as well as dagga and other exhibits with an estimated value of R150 000. Three additional suspects, comprising two males and one female aged between 27 and 33, were arrested for alleged contravention of the Immigration Act relating to illegal immigration. The three suspects are nationals of Eswatini. In a separate operation conducted by the same members within the Seshego policing area, a 35-year-old foreign male was arrested for the possession and dealing in illicit cigarettes. Police recovered illicit cigarettes valued at R850. A 31yr-old male was also arrested for the possession and dealing in dagga and drugs. Police recovered undisclosed cash, dagga with an estimated value of R30 000, and other drugs estimated at R500. A white Volkswagen Polo sedan, with a GP registration number, believed to be linked to the offence, was also seized. The vehicle is estimated to be worth R90 000. Another 35yr-old male was arrested for police interference during the operation. All seven suspects were detained at Seshego Police Station, where the exhibits were handed over for further investigation. The operation resulted in the recovery of equipment and items linked to the processing of abalone that worth millions. #sapsFS [SUSPECT ARRESTED IN POSSESSION OF STONES SUSPECTED TO BE DRUGS AT BRAM FISCHER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT] Visible Policing Unit members responsible for crime prevention at Bram Fischer International Airport were alerted by ACSA Supervisor of suspected material detected by a scanning machine on Saturday, 22/08, at about 11:26. The members responded to the call and, on arrival, were pointed to a hairdresser doll head belonging to the 36-year-old female who was about to depart on a flight to Johannesburg. Local Criminal Records Centre experts were also summoned to process the scene. The hairdresser doll head was opened, and the material stuffed inside the doll with foam was removed. 232 Stones suspected to be rock drug or crack cocaine, with an estimated street value of R300,000, were counted in the presence of the suspect. The police conducted a further body search, and R93 220 in cash was found in the suspect's possession. The 36yr-old old suspect was immediately placed under arrest. A case docket of possession of drugs, with an additional charge of money laundering, was opened at Navalsig Police Station. The docket will be investigated by the DPCI #Hawks. On Friday, 21/08, at approximately 18:00, members of the Flying Squad received information from a reliable source about a silver Volkswagen Touareg allegedly transporting illicit cigarettes around Makotopong, in the Sebayeng policing area. The members immediately responded to the information and proceeded to the area in search of the identified vehicle. They spotted the vehicle travelling out of Makotopong Village and attempted to intercept it. The driver allegedly failed to stop and sped off in the direction of Polokwane along the R81. The members pursued the vehicle, and the chase came to an end when the suspect was cornered at the entrance to Bendor along the R81. The vehicle was searched in the presence of the driver. Police discovered Remington Gold illicit cigarettes inside the vehicle, with an estimated value of R20 000. The 34yr-old suspect was arrested and detained for possession of illicit cigarettes. The Anti-Hijacking Task Team received intell about a hijacked truck carrying stolen power transformers, traveling on the Schoemanskloof Road, towards Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. The Police operationalised the information, and the said truck was spotted and tactically intercepted. Preliminary investigation revealed that the truck was reportedly stolen at Devon in Gauteng. Further search led to the discovery of the reportedly stolen power transformers. It was during this period when the suspect was placed under arrest and then charged for possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle as well as for possession of suspected stolen property. Police are working collaboratively with officials from the Department of Home Affairs to ascertain the status of the arrested suspect. #sapsMP [[R9 MILLION WORTH OF STOLEN COPPER, TRUCK AND TRAILER RECOVERED IN WITBANK, ONE SUSPECT ARRESTED] A multi-disciplinary op by the Nkangala Anti-Hijacking Task Team and Cyber Search Security led to the recovery of stolen property valued at approximately R9 MIL and the arrest of a male suspect, aged 33, in Witbank on 18/08. It is reported that on the said day, 18/08 at approximately 08:30, a truck and trailer with a container loaded with unprocessed copper was hijacked in Grootvlei. The driver was allegedly hijacked along with the vehicle. Through intelligence and swift tracking, Police received information that the trailer was at a certain dealership in Witbank. Police proceeded to the premises and it was during this period when they found the trailer, with the container attached to a different horse truck. The driver could not be located. The owner of the premises, a Zimbabwean national, was found on site and was arrested then charged for possession of suspected stolen property. It was during this time when Police seized a Horse Truck, a Trailer, Container as well as unprocessed Copper valued at about R7.8 MIL and the total value of the property is at about R9 MIL. The suspect is facing charges of possession of suspected stolen property and Police also discovered that the man did not have valid documentation to be in South Africa hence a charge of contravention of the Immigration Act has been laid against the suspect. #sapsGP [SUSPECT ARRESTED AND TWO VICTIMS RESCUED IN KIDNAPPING INCIDENT] On 21/08 at approximately 18:00, #SAPS members were conducting crime prevention duties in the Tshwane area following information regarding the hijacking of an Omoda motor vehicle and the kidnapping of two people, a man and woman in Centurion. The hijacked vehicle was subsequently abandoned by the suspects in Atteridgeville. Further information was received that the suspects and the two victims were travelling in a black Audi in the vicinity of Block XX, Soshanguve, along the R80 Highway, heading south towards Pretoria. Police Members commenced patrols along the Mabopane Highway and spotted a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle. A high-speed pursuit ensued in the direction of Pretoria. As the suspected vehicle approached the Areyeng Bus Station in Paul Kruger Street, the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned. The suspects alighted from the vehicle and fled from the scene on foot. During the incident, shots were exchanged between the police and the suspects. The two victims managed to escape without injuries. Police members conducted an extensive search of the area, including the bus station offices and one of the suspects was apprehended with the assistance of security officers. A search of the suspect led to the discovery of a bag containing a firearm with the serial number filed off, as well as one 9mm magazine containing live ammunition. Investigations continue to determine whether the suspect may be linked to other criminal activities with the firearm handed in for forensic testing. The 47-year-old suspect is expected to appear before Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24/08, facing charges relating to possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, hijacking and kidnapping.
