Today, ICE provided a tour of our Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia, to various House members, including Reps. Pramila Jayapal, Hank Johnson, Valerie Foushee, and others. The tour was scheduled for 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The members arrived almost an hour early, yet ICE personnel were able to provide the requested tour, and further allowed additional time after the agreed-upon 90 minutes. Upon being asked to depart the facility around 2 p.m., the delegation indicated resistance to leaving the facility. Thanks to the calm and professional engagement of ICE personnel onsite, the delegation ultimately did leave, and moved to a separate Department of Justice facility located next to the Stewart facility, where they demanded to sit through a hearing in an immigration courtroom. The delegation remained onsite until about 3:45 p.m. This is not the first time a congressional delegation has disrupted operations during an ICE facility visit. Despite these challenges, ICE continues to provide historic access to our facilities to members of Congress and their staff, with more than 330 such visits executed in Fiscal Year 2026 alone. In Fiscal Year 2024, that number was approximately 50. We will continue to provide this access so the American people can have a better understanding of our operations, facilities and personnel.

ICE is lying, again. They’re claiming we “showed resistance” and “demanded to attend an immigration hearing.” The facts: We had an announced visit scheduled where we met with detained people and left the Stewart Detention Center by around 2:18 PM on our OWN ACCORD. We had our own arrangements with an attorney to go to immigration court to observe a hearing. We went through a separate entrance to the court where ICE tried to BLOCK us from entering, despite them having NO control or jurisdiction over the courts. After waiting about 20 minutes, we finally were able to observe the court proceedings and left at 3:09 PM to then host a press conference OUTSIDE the facility grounds. It’s no surprise ICE is lying — they’re trying to make this about something other than the vile conditions reported inside these private, for-profit prisons. They’re trying to interfere with our duty to perform congressional oversight. But we’re not going to stop. Stewart Detention Center must be shut down. All of these for-profit facilities must be eliminated. And ICE needs to be dismantled.
