DPP to charge politician Rose Mbithe, alongside daughter and son with murder of psychiatrist. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has today informed the court of his decision to charge three suspects with the murder of Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, a psychiatrist and former Director of the African Institute of Mental and Brain Health. Prosecution, led by Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Jalson Makori informed the court that the DPP had registered a murder case at the Nairobi High Court against politician Rose Mbithe, alias Rose Mbithe Ndeti, and her children, advocates Chris Mulwa and Angela Mulwa. Following the decision to charge the suspects, the DPP withdrew an application seeking additional days to detain Angela Mulwa pending the completion of investigations. Ms. Ndeti and Mr. Mulwa have also been in custody while assisting investigators with the ongoing probe. The court heard that Dr. Mutiso was fatally shot in Nairobi on 29th July 2026. Preliminary investigations established that the deceased was involved in a land dispute that was pending before a court in Machakos. Prior to her death, Dr. Mutiso had reported an incident in which two-armed individuals riding a motorcycle confronted her while she was driving in Nairobi. The assailants allegedly pointed a firearm at her, but she managed to escape and subsequently reported the incident at Kilimani Police Station. The DPP's decision to charge the three suspects follows the conclusion of preliminary investigations by the @DCI_Kenya into the circumstances surrounding Dr Mutiso's death and the evidence gathered linking the suspects to the alleged offence. #HakiNaUsawa

DPP obtains 115-year jail term for man convicted on seven terrorism charges The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has obtained a combined 115-year prison sentence against Ibrahim Hussein Hassan after he was convicted on seven terrorism-related offences. Prosecution, led by Principal Prosecution Counsel Kennedy Amwayi and Principal Prosecution Counsel Harrison Kiarie, assisted by Prosecution Counsel Fatuma Ahmed, called 10 witnesses whose evidence proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiage sentenced Hassan to 20 years' imprisonment for being a member of the outlawed terrorist group Al-Shabaab. At the Kahawa Law Courts, Hassan was further sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment on each of the three counts of collecting information connected with the commission of a terrorist act, contrary to Section 29 of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012. On the remaining three counts of possession of articles connected with the commission of a terrorist act, the court imposed 15 years' imprisonment on each count. All the sentences run concurrently. The conviction arose from an incident on 6th September 2022, when the convict was arrested at Eastleigh Section III in Nairobi County and found to be a member of Al-Shabaab, a terrorist organisation proscribed under Kenya Gazette Notice No. 2326 of 7th April 2015. In convicting the accused, Hon. Kiage held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court found that a forensic examination of a Samsung mobile phone recovered from Hassan revealed three videos containing radical extremist terrorist propaganda capable of recruiting, training and radicalising young people. In addition to the custodial sentence, the court directed that Hassan undergoes a deradicalisation programme while serving his prison term. #HakiNaUsawa

DPP charges Magistrate with receiving a bribe The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has today charged Senior Principal Magistrate Hon. Martin Kinyua Mutegi, attached to Kangema Law Courts, with receiving a bribe, following a favourable High Court ruling that paved the way for his arraignment and plea-taking. Hon. Mutegi, who had recently been suspended by his employer, was arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Magistrate’s Court alongside his co-accused, a Senior Probation Officer based at Kangema. Hon. Mutegi was charged with receiving a bribe contrary to Section 6(1) as read with Section 18(1) of the Anti-Bribery Act, among other charges. He denied the charges. The court granted him a bond of Ksh. 800,000 with a surety of a similar amount, or an alternative cash bail of Ksh. 400,000. Prosecution did not oppose the bail terms. The court further directed the accused not to interfere with witnesses in any manner. The arraignment followed the High Court’s decision to decline to grant conservatory orders sought by Hon. Mutegi, in a petition opposed by the DPP. The ruling cleared the way for prosecution to proceed with the charges against him. Consequently, prosecution, led by Assistant Directors of Public Prosecutions Mr. Duncan Ondimu, OGW, Mr. David Ndege and Mr. Eliphas Ombati; Principal Prosecution Counsel Ms. Peninah Mwaniki; and Prosecution Counsels Mr. Abdisalam Bore and Ms. Anne Charlotte, successfully secured the plea-taking before Hon. Harrison Barasa Omwima. The matter will come up for mention on 7th September 2026 for further directions. #HakiNaUsawa

The forum, held exactly one year to the next General Election, brought together key players in the electoral and governance space to discuss the theme: “Can Kenya Deliver Above-board, Credible Campaigns and Elections?” Speaking during the forum, DPP Ingonga explained that the Office has established a fully-fledged division dedicated to handling electoral-related offences, supported by specially trained prosecutors to ensure timely and effective prosecution of offences committed during the electoral period. The DPP warned individuals who may seek to disrupt the electoral process through violence, hate speech, cybercrime, intimidation or other criminal activities that they would face the full force of the law. He, however, noted that prosecuting some hate speech offences, particularly those committed through digital platforms, presents challenges because investigators may require access to digital evidence and confirmation from service providers, many of whom are based outside Kenya. DPP Ingonga assured Kenyans that the Office would work closely with other stakeholders, including investigative agencies, to ensure that the 2027 elections are conducted in a peaceful environment and that electoral offenders are held accountable. He further emphasized that the law would be applied fairly and without discrimination, noting that prosecution decisions are made independently and on the basis of evidence presented before the Office. The DPP was joined at the forum by National Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, National Cohesion and Integration Commission Chairperson Bishop Kepha Omae, Nation Media Group CEO Geoffrey Odundo, Editorial Director Joe Ageyo, University of Nairobi students, activists, among other stakeholders. DPP files extradition proceedings against Chinese national wanted in Uganda over UGX 4.5 Billion fraud. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has today filed extradition proceedings against a 39-year-old Chinese national wanted by the Government of Uganda to face criminal charges arising from an alleged fraud involving UGX 4,533,379,400 (approximately KSh. 151 million). Chen Guang, alias Alex, is accused of manipulating weighbridge bills and payment vouchers during his employment as a cashier at Diamond Steel Uganda Limited. He allegedly exploited his access to the company’s payment documentation and financial processes to facilitate the offences. The extradition proceedings follow a formal request received by the DPP on 10th June 2026 from Uganda. The request, dated 18th April 2025, was transmitted through the Office of the Attorney General and Department of Justice and sought Kenya’s assistance in endorsing and enforcing a Ugandan warrant of arrest and facilitating Guang’s extradition to Uganda. Guang was arrested on 11th August 2026 at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by officers from the Directorate of Immigration Services upon arrival from Harare, Zimbabwe. The warrant of arrest was issued by Chief Magistrate Aciro Joan at the Mukono Chief Magistrates’ Court in Uganda. Prosecution Counsel Fatma Shaban urged the court to order that Guang be surrendered to the Republic of Uganda to face 30 counts of forgery and one count of theft. Ms. Shaban opposed the respondent’s release on bond pending the hearing and determination of the extradition proceedings, citing concerns that he is a flight risk. Prosecution in this matter is led by Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Vincent Monda. #HakiNaUsawa
