‼️ Dear friends and colleagues, I have some very exciting news to share with you. I am in the final stages of editing my memoir, which will be published by HarperCollins in early January. I am currently on book leave, which explains why I have not been appearing on television lately. I have an editing deadline ahead of me, and I am devoting this time to finishing a book that I hope will resonate with and inspire many of you, on many different levels. This is a story for anyone who has been a White House correspondent covering foreign policy across different administrations; for the war correspondents who have witnessed coups d’état, famine, and genocide in Africa; for those who have covered civil wars in Asia, particularly in Sri Lanka; and for every mother who has had to juggle a demanding career with raising children, in my case, as a single mother of two, moving them across four different continents. It is a story of love and loss, of war and survival, of motherhood and career, and, above all, of homeland. My story begins on the shores of the Mediterranean in Gaza, but it does not end in the White House. It spans more than three decades of journalism. I began as a young reporter with a French news agency in Gaza during the First Intifada. Decades later, I found myself in the White House briefing room during the Gaza war, asking questions about a place where my own journey had begun. There is something deeply poignant about that circle. I interviewed U.S. presidents. I covered the Guantanamo trials. I was embedded with the Marines during the Iraq War. Each of these experiences carries its own significant stories, with implications that reach far beyond the events themselves and onto the world stage. But ultimately, I hope this book is about something larger than one person’s career or journey. It is a search for our shared humanity and for hope in a world that can sometimes make hope extraordinarily difficult. There is a line often attributed to Rumi that has stayed with me: “The wound is the place where the light enters you.” Perhaps that is what this book is ultimately about: the wounds we carry, the light we search for, and what we choose to do with both. The work of preserving our humanity can feel like heavy lifting. But I still believe that, together, we can do something meaningful. We can bear witness. We can tell the stories that might otherwise disappear. And when humanity seems to collapse around us, we can still try to save lives and remind one another that a better world is possible.
