Kryptonite may weaken Superman, but real‑life krypton fuel is giving our electric propulsion thrusters a “super” boost! NASA Glenn engineers tested two 12‑kilowatt HERMeS Hall thrusters running side by side — the same type set to take the Space Reactor‑1 Freedom spacecraft to Mars. Instead of traditional xenon, the thrusters ran on krypton, which is more cost-effective for long-duration journeys but can be tougher on hardware. Researchers studied their performance and how quickly their parts wore down. They found that Glenn’s magnetic shielding technology reduced wear-and-tear significantly, giving krypton-fueled thrusters the lifetime needed for round-trip Mars missions.
