Formats this account uses

Its own posting mix on the left, and what each of those formats does across every account we track on the right. Only formats where the effect clears our publish test appear here, so an empty row is a format we could not measure rather than one that does nothing.

August 5 is a painful reminder of the day when a decision was imposed upon J&K by the Government of India, reneging on its own constitutional commitments made to the people of Jammu & Kashmir and unilaterally altering its structure and status, further disempowering a people awaiting conflict resolution. This multi-pronged assault on the identity, character and rights of the people of J&K has left yet another deep wound on our body politic. Yet, the courage and resilience of the people of this land in safeguarding it and standing up for their rights has always been exemplary. We can only hope that a day will come when the Government of India will honour the spirit of Insaniyat and Jamhooriyat, and engage with the people of J&K with Justice, sincerity and respect.

Jama Masjid Srinagar has stood through assaults, sieges, closures and repeated attempts to silence its pulpit. On this day in 1989, during “Operation Jamia Masjid”, its sanctity was violated, worshippers were detained and its sacred space desecrated. Thirty-seven years on, the scars remain. Yet Jama Masjid continues to stand, as Kashmir’s spiritual heart, a witness to its history, and a voice for the faith, dignity and rights of its people.

The policy to silence the pulpit of Jama Masjid and punish me from voicing people’s concerns and standing up in defence of their rights and for justice, continues unabated. I am again put under house arrest today on a Friday, when I was also to preside over a function “Majlis-e-Rahmatal lil Aalameen ﷺ “in connection with the blessed month of Rabi Ul Alwal at Jama Masjid Srinagar. Besides paying tributes to the holy prophet(PBUH), by leading scholars, the function would also mark two special scholarly achievements: the release of Gulzar Ahmad Parray’s word-for-word Kashmiri translation of the Holy Qur’an, and the felicitation of young scholar Mufti Showkat Ahmad Qasmi for memorising the complete Sahih al-Bukhari. The restrictions to prevent me, especially on Friday’s to address the faithful at Jama Masjid, and do my duty as Mirwaiz, though personally very painful will not deter me from fulfilling my responsibilities and from raising people’s voice for their rights. Meanwhile Mohammad Yasin Malik’s affidavit reported in media, particularly his decision not to contest the case further and seek extreme penalty, while maintaining his innocence is very concerning. It calls for serious reflection on commitments made to him and reinforces the need for due process, fairness and a humane approach.

Another Friday, placed under house arrest and prevented from going to Jama Masjid to offer obligatory prayers and deliver the sermon. While as usual no reason is given by the authorities, but the timing, coming soon after Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) raised the legitimate concern over the sale of pork in Kashmir,is telling. Such high-handed measures only reinforce the shrinking space and the reprisal that follows for raising public or religious concerns of the people of Jammu Kashmir. Silencing people’s voices by arrests and bans will neither address concerns nor prevent us from raising them.

The concerns raised by MBBS & BDS interns across J&K deserve serious and urgent consideration. A stipend of ₹12,300 is clearly inadequate for young doctors working long hours and carrying significant clinical responsibilities. With a government-constituted committee having already recommended an enhancement, the prolonged delay is difficult to justify. The administration should engage with the interns, address their genuine demand fairly and expeditiously, and ensure that patient care is not disrupted.

The J&K High Court’s decision to reinstate the J&K Bank officer who had been unjustly dismissed on alleged “anti-national” grounds without a proper inquiry, is a welcome news. Since August 2019 scores of employees in J&K have been dismissed in an arbitrary manner on similar grounds, without departmental inquiries or an adequate opportunity to defend themselves. They all deserve due process, a fair hearing and access to justice. One hopes this judgment will pave the way for justice in other such cases as well. https://t.co/2CRggqxzsc

Placed under house arrest yet again, on the eve of the blessed month of Rabi-ul-Awwal. The repeated and arbitrary restrictions imposed on Fridays are highly condemnable. If the authorities themselves do not trust their own narrative of “normalcy” enough to repeatedly prevent me from going to Jama Masjid, what credibility does that narrative have?
