From Strategic Patience to a National Moment of Decision Pakistan’s repeated military incursions into Afghanistan, its violations of Afghan sovereignty, and the continued loss of innocent civilian lives have pushed the patience of the Afghan people to its limits. While Pakistan possesses greater conventional military capabilities, history has repeatedly shown that military power alone does not decide the outcome of conflicts. Nations fighting to defend their independence, dignity, and homeland often prevail because of their unity, resilience, and determination. Strategic patience is a wise policy when it creates space for dialogue and mutual respect. But when the use of force becomes a recurring pattern and civilians continue to suffer, patience alone is no longer enough. In today’s uncertain international environment, where international law and humanitarian principles are too often applied selectively, every nation must ultimately rely on its own unity, national resolve, and the strength of its people. The most important lesson for Afghanistan is that we must be clear about the challenge we face. The experience of the past five decades suggests that Pakistan’s policies have not been directed only at a particular Afghan government or political movement, but more broadly at the emergence of an independent, stable, and self-reliant Afghanistan. The same experience shows that whenever Afghans have been divided, those divisions have been used to exert pressure and influence; when they have not, military force has too often followed. Our response, therefore, should not be to deepen our own differences, but to manage them wisely, deny others the opportunity to exploit them, and unite around the defense of Afghanistan’s sovereignty, stability, and long-term national interests. Without greater national unity and strategic clarity, lasting peace and security will remain difficult to achieve. This is a defining moment for Afghanistan’s leaders, elders, scholars, and all those who carry public responsibility. Their duty is to rise above political, ethnic, and ideological differences and help unite the nation around a shared vision for its future. History remembers those nations whose leaders, at decisive moments, chose unity over division and the national interest over narrower considerations. Afghanistan stands at such a moment today. The choices we make now will shape not only our security, but also the future we leave to the next generation.
