To pick the United States for your first country visit as Minister of @UgandaMFA speaks volumes about how much importance you place on the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Securing the highest-level meeting in nearly 8 years also shows how much both sides value your relationship and the possibilities for cooperation. My only hope is that the bilateral relationship does not sacrifice the common values of human rights on the altar of economic and security interests. The collective long-term interests of the two countries rest in a more democratic society, not short-term adventurism. Godspeed, @adoniaayebare, in your new docket.

*THE TOWERING KING KAHAYA II OF ANKOLE* Edward Suleiman Kahaya II Rugyengamanzi was the Omugabe of Nkore, later Ankole, and one of Uganda's longest-reigning kings. He took the throne as a teenager in 1895 at around 18 years old, after a succession struggle following the death of Omugabe Ntare V. He was a physically towering figure - about 6'6" (2 metres) tall and weighing 136 kilograms - which his praise singers used as proof of the kingdom's stability. His reign coincided with British colonialism. Installed with the help of his powerful prime minister and kingmaker, Nuwa Mbaguta, and Buganda's Kabaka Mwanga II, Kahaya signed the Ankole Agreement of 1901. Under it, Nkore was renamed Ankole and its territory doubled, absorbing independent chiefdoms like Igara, Buhweju, Sheema and parts of Mpororo, even though he never conquered them himself. In return, his power shrank. From a divine keeper of the sacred drum Bagyendanwa, he was reduced to a paramount chief and administrative clerk under British oversight. In 1918 he was made an honorary OBE for raising levies during World War I. He ruled for 49 years until his death in 1944 and was succeeded by his cousin, Sir Charles Godfrey Gasyonga II, who reigned until Obote abolished kingdoms in 1967. Both are buried at Nkokonjeru Tombs in Mbarara.
