They raised the alarm, calling for help and setting the rescue in motion. The KWS Rapid Response Team rushed to her aid, spending the night by her side, protecting her and monitoring her condition until help could arrive. The KWS ECA Mobile Vet Unit, led by Dr. Michael Njoroge, set out to reach her. The rugged terrain tested their resolve, but nothing could stop the team from pushing forward with the rescue mission. Upon reaching the site, the team found the elephant exhausted and completely caked in dried mud. The team carefully cleared the mud around her body, secured heavy-duty straps beneath her and coordinated a pull using two Mobile Vet Unit vehicles. After hours of painstaking work, she was finally free. ๐ Behind every successful rescue is a team willing to go the extra mile for wildlife. Snares are silent killers. Set to trap wildlife for bushmeat, they do not discriminate. A snare intended for small game can just as easily catch a leopard, elephant, antelope, or even injure a person who unknowingly crosses its path. This young male leopard was found trapped in a cable-wire snare outside Tsavo East National Park, near Voi Wildlife Lodge. The snare had tightened around him, leaving injuries at the base of his tail, likely caused by sharp objects as he struggled to escape. The KWS Tsavo team successfully immobilised and treated him before translocating him to Tsavo East National Park, where he has a good prognosis and a second chance to return to the wild. But the danger did not end with his rescue. A search of the surrounding area revealed more snares; set and waiting. The team dismantled them, removing deadly threats from the landscape. Snares are not just a threat to wildlife. They can cause prolonged suffering, endanger people and fuel the illegal bushmeat trade. Bushmeat trade and consumption is illegal and can pose serious risks to human health.
