Early reading. We have captured 3 original posts for this account, below the 8 we require before treating a median as settled. The numbers above describe what we have seen so far, not a finished profile of the account.

A typical post picks up 54 interactions against 129K followers, an engagement rate of 0.042%. Posts are seen about 3.8K times each, and 1.41% of those impressions turn into an interaction. That is about 2.98% of the follower count, which is the gap between an audience on paper and an audience in a timeline. Posting runs at about 0.63 post a day over the last 30 days, though only 37% of days saw any activity at all. Most posts go out around 07:00 UTC, and Saturday is the busiest day of the week. Of the 3 posts sampled, 33% carry an image or video and 67% link out. The account's strongest tracked post pulled 10K interactions, about 193x its own typical post. Recurring topics include #chilime, #civicinfrastructure, #delhi. Only 3 original posts have been captured so far, fewer than the 8 posts we want behind a median before treating it as settled. Read the figures above as an early measurement of this account, not as a finished profile of it.

Engagement rate as a share of followers, across the 204,694 accounts we have scanned enough to measure. The axis is logarithmic, because the top and bottom of this population are about 22,880 times apart and a linear axis would flatten everything below the median into a single point.

Posting timing

This account posts most often around 07:00 UTC, and Saturday is its busiest day of the week. The bars below are the catalog-wide pattern, with this account's own busiest slot marked. They do not show how this account performs at each hour: we keep one aggregate per account, not one per hour, so that measurement does not exist in our data.

Formats this account uses

Its own posting mix on the left, and what each of those formats does across every account we track on the right. Only formats where the effect clears our publish test appear here, so an empty row is a format we could not measure rather than one that does nothing.

  • 33% of this account's sampled posts carry an image or video. Across the catalog, posts with an image or video run 111% above the same accounts' other posts.
  • 67% of its posts carry a link off X. Across the catalog, posts with an outbound link run 41% below the same accounts' other posts, so a large share of this account's output sits in the weakest bucket we measure.
  • Its average post runs 252 characters, which falls in the 180 - 280 characters band. Across the catalog, posts of 180 to 280 characters match the same accounts' other posts almost exactly.

These are catalog-wide differences applied to this account's own posting mix, not a measurement of how each format performs for this account specifically. We keep one median per account, not one per format per account, so the second thing is not something this data can tell you.

The most heartbreaking picture I took today. This man is willing to walk 495 kms till Kanpur, his home, from Delhi because he has no way to sustain himself here with his 3 yr old daughter. "Wahan peene ko paani toh milega," he says. #TotalLockdown #CoronaOutbreak https://t.co/zaVnFCyJEy

Yesterday, I went to New Delhi Railway Station to pick up my 85+ year-old nanna, travelling from Bihar and get her home. It took us more than an hour to walk from Platform 12 to the parking lot, a distance that should take five minutes for a healthy person. There were no e-rickshaws, wheelchairs, and absolutely no way to get her carried. So I held her, put my arm around her, and we walked. We stopped every two minutes because she was struggling to breathe. Passengers made way for us and some came up to me and said, "Please don't make her walk.” And for a moment, I thought: people are not so bad. It took an hour, two policemen, a policewoman who gently rubbed Nanna’s back while she caught her breath, talking to me about how unkind "old age can be" and then, a young boy who put his hands behind her on the escalator while I literally carried her up. She could have fallen. But why did we have to depend on the kindness of strangers to get an 85-year-old woman out of a railway station? Why are there not enough lifts at Delhi’s main railway station? Why is there no reliable, accessible transport from the platforms to the parking? Why must an elderly person, a person with a disability, someone injured, pregnant, sick or simply not physically strong enough to walk endlessly fight their way through public infrastructure? Nanna cannot travel by flight. She is too old and anxious. And she is not an exception. Lakhs of Indians travel by train because they cannot, or do not, travel by air... A city that works only for the young, healthy and physically able is not an accessible city. Yesterday, I was grateful for the people who helped us, but also angry that we needed them at all. What are people supposed to do? Heart breaks.

A rather surreal day. Under a Saffron Sky, published by Penguin Viking, is officially out today. Over six years of reporting, and following one question through hundreds of conversations, countless journeys across India. Today, that reporting becomes a book, and, more importantly, becomes something readers can argue with, question, disagree with, and hopefully, carry with them. https://t.co/wu5r7NmI9J
