Researchers at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and the University of Southampton have developed a flat ribbon-shaped optical fiber called HARFF (High Aspect Ratio Flat Fiber) that achieves up to 1,000 times greater pressure sensitivity than conventional cylindrical optical fibers. The flat geometry β with aspect ratios approaching 20:1 β allows the fiber to deform far more responsively to transverse forces and hydrostatic pressure than a round fiber, changing its optical properties in ways that can be precisely measured. Two air channels running through the fiber create deliberate asymmetric deformation under pressure, altering a property called birefringence that shifts the light pattern traveling through it. A separate version with a tin-based alloy filling one channel demonstrated enhanced temperature sensing, exploiting the mismatch in thermal expansion between metal and glass. The team has already drawn more than 120 meters of HARFF from a single experimental preform, demonstrating manufacturability at scale. Potential applications include structural health monitoring in composite aircraft wings, drones, bridges, batteries, and industrial equipment β anywhere early detection of strain, pressure, or temperature changes is critical. "This is not just a different looking fiber, it is a new design space for optical fiber," said KTH researcher Pawel Maniewski. A team from the Beijing Institute of Technology has developed a chip that enables real-time hyperspectral imaging analysis on a single piece of hardware, eliminating the need for bulky back-end servers and massive data transfers. Hyperspectral imaging captures the unique "spectral fingerprint" of materials across the electromagnetic spectrum, making it vital for satellite remote sensing, industrial inspection, and materials identification β but a single image can occupy hundreds of megabytes to gigabytes of data. The BIT team solved the processing bottleneck by mining data correlations to eliminate redundant calculations and redesigning the chip's arithmetic units for continuous on-chip processing. The chip follows a 2024 breakthrough by the same team that miniaturized the optical system of hyperspectral cameras to chip scale. Together, the two innovations enable fully compact, portable hyperspectral systems. The implications for satellite remote sensing are significant: instead of transmitting raw data to ground stations for processing, satellites could analyze hyperspectral data on board in real time. "When computing is chip-based, data no longer needs to be transmitted to the ground for processing β satellites can produce results in real time, right on board," said Professor Bian Liheng. Russia's Rassvet satellite network β billed as the country's answer to Starlink β is off to a troubled start. Two launches in March and July delivered 32 satellites to low-Earth orbit, but none have reached their intended 500-mile operational altitude. At least three have suffered outright failures: one reentered the atmosphere in June, and two from the July launch appear headed for reentry without ever maneuvering. Most functioning satellites have settled around 300 miles rather than the planned 500 miles. The issues reflect Russia's chronic struggles with satellite production: the country has produced just a few dozen spacecraft per year since the Soviet Union's collapse. Russia's war in Ukraine has compounded the problem, diverting funding and personnel while Ukraine has struck the factory building the Soyuz rockets needed for Rassvet launches and sent drones toward the Plesetsk Cosmodrome launch site. The stakes are high: Russian military forces have been hungry for Rassvet access since SpaceX cut off unauthorized Russian use of Starlink terminals in February. The 12 Rassvet satellites currently in stable orbit pass over Ukraine twice daily with 90-minute communication windows β still far short of continuous coverage, which would require 16 more launches.
