It is with a heavy heart and profound sense of national loss that I received the news of the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari who died at the age of 82. President Buhari was a notable leader, patriot, and elder statesman who served our beloved nation as both a military Head of State and President, to the best of his abilities. He will be remembered as a courageous leader, a disciplined officer, and a committed public servant who made considerable contributions towards the peace and progress of our dear nation. The late President was deeply admired across the strata of society for his decency, integrity and exemplary life of service. As a leader, he was selfless in his commitment to his duty and served the country with character and a deep sense of patriotism. In his passing, Nigeria has lost one of its foremost leaders, and I have lost a respected colleague and elder. His legacy will continue to endure in the hearts of all who value sacrifice, integrity, perseverance and devotion to national ethos. On behalf of my family and the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, the good people of Katsina State and all Nigerians who mourn this great loss. A servant leader, with whom I shared a common vision for a united, inclusive and a just nation. President Yar’Adua’s life was defined by service and selflessness. His account of stewardship, whether as a teacher, governor or president, was guided by hard work, patriotism, accountability, commitment to justice and adherence to the rule of law. As President, Yar’Adua carried with him the burden of reconciling our people, fostering unity and mobilising citizens across the land towards building a nation of justice, peace and progress. His tenure, although short, was impactful and progressive, a moment we remember for selfless service and deep commitment to the public good. Fifteen years after his passing, he continues to stand as a reference for good leadership and a legacy of impact, peace and accountability. Today in Abuja, I attended the 13th Convocation Ceremony of Nile University, where I urged the graduating students to uphold the highest standards of moral conduct and to use the knowledge they have acquired to contribute meaningfully to the progress of our society. I extend my sincere appreciation to the management of Nile University for conferring on me the Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (Political Science). OSUN AND THE NEED TO SET NEW BOUNDARIES FOR POLITICAL CONDUCT IN OFF-CYCLE ELECTIONS The outcome of the recent governorship election in Osun State demonstrates that, despite the challenges confronting our democracy, we possess the capacity to conduct elections in a manner that strengthens public confidence in our democratic institutions. I therefore commend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the security agencies, political parties and, most importantly, the people of Osun State for the peaceful conduct of the recent governorship election. While we commend the electoral process itself, there are developments surrounding the election and, more importantly, an emerging trend in political conduct during off-cycle elections that raises concerns. The growing practice whereby serving governors, senior political office holders, party leaders and other influential government functionaries, accompanied by large numbers of aides and heavy security details from outside a state, converge on states where elections are being conducted raises an issue that demands national attention. The conduct witnessed around the recent elections in Osun, Ekiti and Ondo States was, in my view, unusual. It is not a practice that should become normal in a democratic society. I recall that, as President, similar situations arose during the 2013 Anambra and 2014 Ekiti governorship elections. On those occasions, senior political leaders mobilised and descended upon the states. Upon being briefed, I ordered party leaders and senior government officials to leave the states immediately. This trend is unwholesome. If left unchecked, it could threaten our fragile democracy and have serious long-term implications for democratic stability. Political parties are entitled to campaign, mobilise their supporters and deploy their legitimate party structures. That is an essential part of democracy. However, there is a point at which political mobilisation, particularly when it involves the overwhelming presence of serving governors, senior public officials and powerful political actors from across the country on election day, can create an atmosphere of apprehension, intimidation, bullying and undue pressure. We must ask ourselves whether the increasing deployment of political power and large-scale mobilisation by senior office holders on election day in states holding elections is consistent with the spirit of free, fair and peaceful democratic competition. This hardly happens in other democratic countries. We must not allow political competition to become a contest in which victory is perceived as something that must be achieved at all costs. There is also the question of precedent. If the current trend becomes established, what happens when governors from opposing political parties begin to descend on every state holding a competitive election? What happens when each party seeks to match political power with political power, governmental influence with governmental influence, and mobilisation with counter-mobilisation? Such a development would not strengthen our democracy. It would deepen political tensions and could make elections increasingly resemble battles for political survival rather than peaceful contests for the mandate of the people. I therefore believe that this matter should not be treated as a partisan dispute concerning the Osun election. It is a broader national issue concerning the future of our electoral democracy. Those of us who have occupied public office must recognise that our conduct carries a greater responsibility. The power and influence attached to public office should be used to strengthen democratic institutions, not to create apprehension among political opponents or citizens.

I extend my deepest condolences to H. E @JDMahama, the Government and people of Ghana, and the bereaved families on the tragic incident of the military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Environment, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and other distinguished officers and citizens. They were committed public servants who gave their lives in service to their country. Their passing leaves a painful void in the hearts of many. I join you in paying tribute to their patriotism and the sacrifices they made for the peace, security, and progress of Ghana. I pray that their legacy continues to inspire future generations of Ghanaian leaders. May God grant you, the affected families, and the people of Ghana the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. And may the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace. - GEJ

2025 Christmas Message Compliments of the Season to Nigerians and friends around the world. Christmas marks the birth of Jesus Christ, whose coming affirmed God’s promise of redemption, hope, and peace for all humanity. It is a season that reminds Christians of the power of faith, humility, and selfless service, and of the enduring light that shines even in times of uncertainty. As a nation, we reflect on these values at a moment when many Nigerians are facing economic and social challenges. Christmas calls us not to surrender to despair, but to hold firmly to hope and to the belief that renewal is possible. The history of faith teaches us that hope is most powerful when it is tested. Just as the birth of Christ brought a new dawn to a world in search of direction, our collective faith and resilience will see us triumph over our present trials. This season also calls us to peace and unity. Nigeria’s strength lies in our shared humanity and our willingness to live with compassion, mutual respect, and responsibility toward one another. This honour belongs to every Nigerian who believes in the possibility of peace and to every African working for the progress and advancement of our continent. I congratulate other awardees and thank the co-founder of the Universal Peace Federation, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, the Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation, as well as my wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, for her love and support.
