    Renowned Japanese avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama passed away at the age of 97 in a Tokyo hospital on August 14, 2026, with her studio and foundation officially announcing her death on August 27... Yayoi Kusama was one of the most distinctive figures in contemporary art, famous for her polka dots, pumpkins, Infinity Nets, and mirrored rooms. Born in Japan in 1929, Kusama began experiencing vivid hallucinations as a child, including fields of dots, flowers, lights, and patterns that appeared to spread across her surroundings. Drawing and painting became a way of recording and coping with these experiences, and repetition eventually became one of the defining features of her art. Kusama moved to New York in 1958 and became part of the city's avant-garde art world. During the 1960s, she experimented with enormous patterned paintings, sculptures, installations, performances, and mirrored environments. Her first Infinity Mirror Room appeared in 1965, decades before such immersive installations became enormously popular with museum audiences. After returning to Japan in 1973, Kusama continued struggling with her mental health. In 1977, she voluntarily became a permanent resident of a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo. This wasn't the end of her artistic career. She established a studio nearby and maintained a remarkably disciplined routine, leaving the hospital to work and returning afterward. Kusama herself described the hospital as a place she chose to live while receiving treatment. For decades, this unusual arrangement allowed her to continue producing paintings, sculptures, novels, poetry, and enormous installations. In later years, particularly after the pandemic, she increasingly worked from a room within the hospital itself. Her experiences with hallucinations, repetition, infinity, and what she called โ€œself-obliterationโ€ remained deeply connected to her work.
