The Killer App for AI Glasses May Be Independence. The Biggest Risk May Be Privacy. Smart glasses get sold on convenience. Photos, calls, directions, translation. But the uses that actually land are about letting people handle ordinary life without asking for help. Don Overton lost his sight in a bunker explosion during Desert Storm with the 82nd Airborne. He spent 30 years cycling through adaptive tech before trying Ray-Ban Meta glasses, then worked with Meta's wearables team on accessibility features. That turned into something bigger. In June, Meta said it would donate glasses to every legally blind veteran in America, more than 130,000 people, with training through the Blinded Veterans Association. His framing is blunt. Losing his eyesight cost him his independence and the glasses gave it back. Clarke Reynolds, a British braille artist known as Mr Dot, has retinitis pigmentosa and describes his vision as being underwater. In April he ran the Brighton Marathon with no physical guide, using Ray-Ban Meta glasses and the Be My Eyes app so remote volunteers could watch his route live, rotating every 30 minutes. He finished in 6:19:41. That one is the better engineering story. A guide runner has to hold the blind runner's pace. Remote volunteers don't, so he ran his own race. Same idea at work. A mechanic diagnosing a fault without hunting for the manual. A broadband tech getting instructions up a pole. A field engineer who isn't pulling out a phone every two minutes. Bosma Enterprises in Indianapolis is already there. More than half its workforce is blind, the largest employer of blind people in Indiana. Eric Knight, a manufacturing manager who lost his vision to diabetic retinopathy, uses the glasses to have barcodes and SKUs read aloud. But everything that makes these useful makes them easy to abuse. A camera worn all day sees coworkers, customers, patients, strangers. A mic picks up conversations nobody thought were being collected. Take the glasses helping that technician. Now use the same pair to track where he looks, score his productivity and pipe every customer interaction back to management. Same hardware. The difference is entirely policy. Regulation is moving. New York banned AI glasses in state courthouses in July, and courts in England and Wales started confiscating them in August. California's SB 1130 would criminalize recording someone with a wearable inside a business without consent, with a carve out for disability access. Meta has patched too, disabling the camera when the recording LED is covered or tampered with. If you're deploying this, privacy can't be a paragraph in a PDF nobody opens. Consent, recording indicators, retention limits, access controls and monitoring rules need settling before these become standard kit. The accessibility case is as strong as anything in wearables in a decade. The surveillance case is just as strong, on the same device. When the computer sits on your face, who gets the footage stops being a footnote.
