Elon Musk was born very special and unique. By the age of 3, he was already capable of deep reflection. Playing with his toy truck, he saw its flaws and knew how to make it better. He told his mom, "I can build a better truck than this." While any adult at the time would have smiled indulgently and thought something like, "What a funny kid," Maye already understood that Elon was a genius. She was right, and we constantly see evidence of this. Elon is not just brilliant in his ideas; he is also capable of bringing them to life, which is pretty rare. In 2001, Elon Musk nearly died of malaria. In late 2000, after Peter Thiel and the board pushed him out as PayPal CEO, Elon took his first real weeklong break from work. He went to Brazil to see a cousin, then to South Africa for a family wedding. After time with family in Pretoria, he and then-wife Justine went to a game reserve. He got back to Palo Alto in January 2001 and started feeling bad. At Stanford's ER and Sequoia Hospital, he received a wrong diagnosis while his symptoms continued to worsen. A doctor from San Jose General who actually knew tropical disease walked past the Elon bed and recognized Plasmodium falciparum malaria - the strain that can wreck the brain, lungs, and blood in a day once it turns severe. After symptoms get that bad, patients often have about a day before the parasite is effectively untreatable. Elon recalled: “I was first misdiagnosed at Stanford Hospital with viral meningitis, then again misdiagnosed at Sequoia. A visiting doc from San Jose General saw my charts & sent me to ICU immediately. I was ~36 hours from being unrecoverable.”

Fun fact: In the early days of SpaceX, Fridays had a different sound, or rather, taste 😋 The company had a wonderful tradition: after a week in which everyone was making the impossible a reality, on Fridays, SpaceX would order ice cream for all employees of the company, paying for the order with a corporate card. The interesting thing was that no matter what position you held, whether you were a rookie or a vice president, you would go get ice cream for everyone and bring it to the office. Later, a tradition arose to stay in the office after work to play Quake, where employees could beat each other or Elon Musk, who would set impossible tasks for them all day and demand their completion🤣 All positions and hierarchies remained behind the door, in the game, everyone was equal. That's how SpaceX and Elon entertained their people. That's how they brought the team together, with ice cream, a game, and the feeling that everyone is equal.
