I have never been one to make a great fuss about my own birthday. Today, as I turn 61, what I feel most is gratitude. There is something about this year, 2026, about all we have been through, the love we have shared and the losses we have felt, that makes the gift of another birthday especially precious. These moments remind us how much it matters to have people to share our lives with. I am grateful for life. For my family, my friends and the people who quietly hold me up. For the privilege of serving this country I love. For all of you whose encouragement gives me strength, especially on the difficult days. I could not do this without you. To everyone whose well wishes have reached me so early this morning, and everyone who will reach out throughout the day, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel the love, and I do not take a moment of it for granted. Thank you for continuing to walk with me as the years go by, and as I give of my best in service to Barbados and our people. Ampliamos investimentos, com foco na inovação e na ampliação de programas de acesso à saúde para as famílias brasileiras. Também entregamos à Organização Pan-Americana da Saúde (Opas/OMS) o dossiê que comprova que o Brasil eliminou a transmissão vertical da hepatite B, ou seja, das mães para os filhos recém-nascidos. Reconhecimento de um trabalho construído com vacinação, pré-natal de qualidade, diagnóstico e muito cuidado para proteger mães e crianças. Fiz questão de convidá-lo, Doutor Tedros, pois o que estamos fazendo aqui é um exemplo para o mundo. E porque temos orgulho de dizer que não existe, no planeta Terra, um país com mais de 100 milhões de habitantes com um sistema de saúde que funciona como o SUS. Since the first media reports, @WHO has been actively following up on the reported death of a laboratory worker at the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute in Irkutsk oblast, Russian Federation. The individual died on 2 October 2026 after being hospitalised with severe pneumonia. Initial media reports suggested pneumonic plague following an alleged accidental laboratory exposure. In response to WHO’s verification request under the International Health Regulations, the Russian health authorities reported that no case of plague had recently been registered in Irkutsk oblast. They informed WHO that an epidemiological investigation had been conducted, preventive and control measures implemented, and identified contacts placed under medical observation and tested. They reported that no high-threat pathogens had been detected among the contacts and that medical observation of all identified contacts had been completed. WHO has remained in contact with the Russian health authorities and has offered technical support. WHO has requested further information to clarify the cause of the severe pneumonia, the pathogen that prompted the public health measures, and media reports of a second employee with pneumonia of undetermined cause. Timely, complete and transparent information sharing under the International Health Regulations is essential to clarify conflicting reports and enable an accurate assessment of potential public health risks.

I'm devastated and heartbroken at the passing of a very dear friend and colleague, Aidan O'Leary, Director of the @WHO Polio Eradication Programme. Aidan's passing is a shock to all of us, and especially to his family and friends in his native Ireland and around the world. On behalf of WHO, I extend my deepest condolences to all of them. Aidan was an outstanding humanitarian. He served tirelessly in the most difficult parts of the world, to help the most vulnerable populations survive and thrive, and to #EndPolio. He embodied the ideal of service and solidarity across peoples and borders. His passing is a terrible loss for WHO, for the @UN and for all of humanity. We will miss Aidan enormously. But we are committed to continuing his legacy to realise his vision - and ours - of a polio-free world. Rest in peace, my dear friend.
