Visitamos o Hospital Federal do Andaraí, Unidades Odontológicas Móveis e outros veículos da saúde. Apresentamos avanços importantes do nosso SUS. Transformamos seis hospitais federais aqui da cidade, que estavam abandonados, em centros de excelência. Ampliamos investimentos, com foco na inovação e na ampliação de programas de acesso à saúde para as famílias brasileiras. Também entregamos à Organização Pan-Americana da Saúde (Opas/OMS) o dossiê que comprova que o Brasil eliminou a transmissão vertical da hepatite B, ou seja, das mães para os filhos recém-nascidos. Reconhecimento de um trabalho construído com vacinação, pré-natal de qualidade, diagnóstico e muito cuidado para proteger mães e crianças. Fiz questão de convidá-lo, Doutor Tedros, pois o que estamos fazendo aqui é um exemplo para o mundo. E porque temos orgulho de dizer que não existe, no planeta Terra, um país com mais de 100 milhões de habitantes com um sistema de saúde que funciona como o SUS. Tivemos o prazer de receber o diretor-geral da Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS), Tedros Adhanom, para uma visita ao Hospital Federal do Andaraí, no Rio de Janeiro. Mostramos para ele a revolução que estamos fazendo no SUS, modernizando e ampliando o atendimento, para que todo brasileiro, independentemente de classe social, possa ter acesso à saúde do mais alto nível. Com alegria, recebemos do dr. Tedros o reconhecimento de que o Brasil tem vontade política para dar dignidade a todos os seus cidadãos. É isso que continuaremos fazendo, sempre. I'm devastated and heartbroken at the passing of a very dear friend and colleague, Aidan O'Leary, Director of the @WHO Polio Eradication Programme. Aidan's passing is a shock to all of us, and especially to his family and friends in his native Ireland and around the world. On behalf of WHO, I extend my deepest condolences to all of them. Aidan was an outstanding humanitarian. He served tirelessly in the most difficult parts of the world, to help the most vulnerable populations survive and thrive, and to #EndPolio. He embodied the ideal of service and solidarity across peoples and borders. His passing is a terrible loss for WHO, for the @UN and for all of humanity. We will miss Aidan enormously. But we are committed to continuing his legacy to realise his vision - and ours - of a polio-free world. Rest in peace, my dear friend.

#Ethiopia needs peace, not more war. For three years, armed conflict in Amhara has cost countless lives. Oromia continues to bleed. Tigray teeters back into open fighting, Afar has been drawn in, and Benishangul-Gumuz remains gripped by violence too. Enough. I urge the federal government and all regional leaders to choose dialogue over guns, and to pursue real political solutions. War only brings death, destruction, displacement, and deprivation. Ethiopians deserve better.

I congratulate #Uganda’s government, and all involved in the response, for passing the 42 day monitoring period with no cases of #Ebola. With a focus on preparedness, increased surveillance to find potential cases in health facilities and communities, and careful management of points of entry, countries can keep people and goods moving while ensuring people stay safe, or receive care if they are sick.

.@WHO is scaling up its response to #Nepal's flood emergency further, releasing US$150,000 in immediate funding, with additional resources expected to be released as needs assessments continue. Within hours of the disaster striking, WHO deployed emergency supplies, including interagency emergency health supplies that could provide essential materials for nearly 10,000 people for 3 months, as well as tents, 10,000 masks, gloves and hand sanitizers. Our immediate priority is to support health services for the affected communities and restore disrupted health services. In addition, WHO is providing vital coordination among partners, surveillance and technical assistance to protect public health, all under the leadership of the Nepalese government. As the flood-affected communities face immense challenges, sustained support from all partners will be critical. WHO stands with the Government and people of Nepal at this difficult moment and remains ready to provide support based on the country's evolving needs.
