The ethnic profiling remarks made by CS Aden Duale in response to the Ol Kalou by-election are deeply regrettable. It is both overly simplistic and dangerous to reduce the governmentโs political challenges to tribal prejudice, especially when this very Kikuyu community stood with us so overwhelmingly in the past. Cabinet Secretary @HonAdenDuale, given your stature and long experience in politics, such utterances are wholly unacceptable. An apology is not only necessary, it is owed to the people of Kenya. As we move toward the General Election, let us embrace responsibility and sobriety in our words and actions. Kenya belongs to all of us, Kikuyus included, and our unity must never be undermined by careless rhetoric. @WilliamsRuto

I have stood against ethnic-based politics when espoused by some leaders in Mt Kenya. In equal measure, I strongly stand against the Hassan Omar type of ethnic baiting that seeks to isolate the people of Mt Kenya. The Tutam movement, to which we remain fully committed, is a national movement that does not legitimize the spewing of ethnic hatred, however couched. As a nation, we have been there before and we said never again! That approach may excite crowds, but it is short-sighted, undemocratic, and can ultimately only be severely injurious to the nation. He owes our nation an apology.

I strongly condemn the violent attack on gospel artist Rachel Wandeto for merely expressing her political preference. This is unacceptable in Kenya, a country that has repeatedly said โnever againโ to political violence. The continued and dangerous trend of violence, especially towards women who dare to hold alternative views, is unacceptable. Such conduct must be condemned by all, particularly those whose supporters may have carried out this vile act, unless it was done with their tacit support or blessing. On this issue, there can be no partisanship. I call on law enforcement to swiftly investigate, bring the culprits to book, and ensure justice is served. I unequivocally denounce the growing culture of violence and unrest most recently witnessed in Homa Bay County on Sunday. The harrowing images of roadblocks, convoys under attack, vehicles set ablaze, injuries to citizens and security personnel, and the tragic loss of lives are unacceptable in a democratic society. Our political competition must be with respect to the rule of law and the upholding of human rights - not through destruction or bloodshed. This is even more critical as we head into a season of competitive elections. I convey my deepest sympathies to the families mourning loved ones and extend prayers for the swift recovery of all those injured. Kenya is our shared home. Together, we must reject violence in all its manifestations and safeguard the democratic space that generations of citizens have worked tirelessly to nurture. Those with the responsibility to keep peace and security in Kenya must manifestly be seen to do their jobs impartially and effectively.
