Angela Maiers - Keynote | Author | Change Maker engagement report
@AngelaMaiers - 122K followers on X
Measured over 2 original posts from a 30-day window, last computed on October 5, 2026.
Engagement
Early reading. We have captured 2 original posts for this account, below the 8 we require before treating a median as settled. The numbers above describe what we have seen so far, not a finished profile of the account.
A typical post picks up 84 interactions against 122K followers, an engagement rate of 0.069%. Posts are seen about 3.6K times each, and 2.29% of those impressions turn into an interaction. That is about 3.00% of the follower count, which is the gap between an audience on paper and an audience in a timeline. Posting runs at about 0.13 posts a day over the last 30 days, though only 13% of days saw any activity at all. Most posts go out around 22:00 UTC, and Tuesday is the busiest day of the week. Of the 2 posts sampled, 50% link out. The account's strongest tracked post pulled 5.9K interactions, about 71x its own typical post. Only 2 original posts have been captured so far, fewer than the 8 posts we want behind a median before treating it as settled. Read the figures above as an early measurement of this account, not as a finished profile of it.

Formats this account uses
Its own posting mix on the left, and what each of those formats does across every account we track on the right. Only formats where the effect clears our publish test appear here, so an empty row is a format we could not measure rather than one that does nothing.
| Format | This account | Catalog effect | 95% interval | Accounts behind it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Image or video | 0% of posts | +111% | +108% to +115% | 34K |
| Outbound link | 50% of posts | -41% | -42% to -40% | 32K |
| Typical length | - | +15% | +14% to +16% | 32K |
- 0% of this account's sampled posts carry an image or video. Across the catalog, posts with an image or video run 111% above the same accounts' other posts.
- 50% of its posts carry a link off X. Across the catalog, posts with an outbound link run 41% below the same accounts' other posts, so a large share of this account's output sits in the weakest bucket we measure.
- Its average post runs 297 characters, which falls in the over 280 characters band. Across the catalog, posts over 280 characters run 15% above the same accounts' other posts.
These are catalog-wide differences applied to this account's own posting mix, not a measurement of how each format performs for this account specifically. We keep one median per account, not one per format per account, so the second thing is not something this data can tell you.

Nobody is talking about this. The children born today will never know a world without autonomous AI. They won’t Google things. They’ll ask an agent. They won’t learn to code. They’ll learn to direct. They won’t write resumes. There may not be jobs to apply to. We’re raising the first generation of humans who will grow up alongside minds that aren’t human. And we’re parenting them with a 1995 playbook. The most important skill you can teach your kids right now isn’t math or coding. It’s how to think. How to discern. How to stay human when everything around them isn’t.

Students need to read books. Entire books. Our society is distracted, unfocused, and in a hurry. A curriculum that rushes through content perpetuates the anxiety of our time. Reading a book (slowly and leisurely) is a countercultural act.

What’s changed with students since Covid? Plenty. But one thing stands out to me: stamina. The stamina to read. The stamina to write. It wasn’t perfect before Covid, but it feels like it’s gotten worse. What do you think?

“My child can’t read!” That’s become a common complaint from parents. Why? It might be because kids are distracted by social media and video games. But I think it’s also because reading instruction became lazy and political. https://t.co/X2fyD7DCQm

This might be the most important insight regarding the decline of public education. The consumer (parents) are watching grades as the Key Performance Indicator. So grade inflation is serving as an effective mask for school performance. The plummeting outcomes on standardized assessments should worry everyone as much as they concern the K-12 education community. But they won’t as long as report cards are full of A’s and B’s. @jillbarshay on the latest study sending the same signals about parent attitudes.

I just read an article about the saturation of devices and YouTube videos in k-12 classrooms. Some parents complained that students were “being read to” by YouTube instead of their teachers. Why in the world would teachers want to delegate one of the best parts of teaching?!

Make direct instruction, science of reading, knowledge-based curriculum, tech-minimal classrooms, classic books, high expectations, rigorous testing, and discipline the norm in every American school.

The National Reading Panel was the most comprehensive study of reading instruction ever done. It was a "metastudy" (a study of studies). It looked at all of the research on reading methods that had yet been done. ALL of it. It determined which studies met basic research criteria (most studies on anything, especially education, are schlock) and only considered them. It found that programs using systematic phonics are more effective than those that use unsystematic approaches or no phonics at all. The critics of phonics have a hard time dealing with this.

In a real sense, the most important inequality is between people with driving purpose and confidence on one hand, and people who have accepted passivity and dependence on the other. That's the most brutal divide. One group is going to thrive regardless of circumstances. The other group is going to struggle. School is actively creating this inequality. It's sorting kids into the passive and dependent category by training those qualities every day for years. The gap between the two groups gets wider every year. And school is making it worse, not better.
