This Nigerian Muslim cleric, Abubakar Abdullahi, concealed two hundred and sixty-two Christians within his mosque and positioned himself at the doorway to prevent armed assailants from reaching them. In June 2018 armed individuals assaulted settlements in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of approximately eighty persons. As individuals sought refuge, Imam Abubakar admitted into his mosque and residence Christians who were escaping the assault. He sheltered two hundred and sixty-two of them within. When the armed men arrived at the mosque the imam remained at the entrance and declared that all those inside were Muslim. He declined to permit their entry, thereby endangering his own life in order to safeguard those concealed inside. The two hundred and sixty-two Christians survived. Abdullahi subsequently received recognition from the United States through the International Religious Freedom Award in 2019 for his bravery and for shielding adherents of a different faith.
