Early reading. We have captured 6 original posts for this account, below the 8 we require before treating a median as settled. The numbers above describe what we have seen so far, not a finished profile of the account.

A typical post picks up 364 interactions against 116K followers, an engagement rate of 0.314%. Posts are seen about 23K times each, and 1.61% of those impressions turn into an interaction. That is about 19.5% of the follower count, which is the gap between an audience on paper and an audience in a timeline. Posting runs at about 0.2 posts a day over the last 30 days, though only 13% of days saw any activity at all. Most posts go out around 16:00 UTC, and Wednesday is the busiest day of the week. Of the 6 posts sampled, 100% carry an image or video. The account's strongest tracked post pulled 3.3K interactions, about 9.1x its own typical post. Recurring topics include #isaias, #hawaii, #nolo. Only 6 original posts have been captured so far, fewer than the 8 posts we want behind a median before treating it as settled. Read the figures above as an early measurement of this account, not as a finished profile of it.

This account posts most often around 16:00 UTC, and Wednesday is its busiest day of the week. The bars below are the catalog-wide pattern, with this account's own busiest slot marked. They do not show how this account performs at each hour: we keep one aggregate per account, not one per hour, so that measurement does not exist in our data.

Formats this account uses

Its own posting mix on the left, and what each of those formats does across every account we track on the right. Only formats where the effect clears our publish test appear here, so an empty row is a format we could not measure rather than one that does nothing.

We are monitoring a tropical disturbance in the Bay of Campeche near the tail-end of a Gulf Coast cold front that could end up impacting Gulf states in a few days. While poorly organized right now, thunderstorm activity is increasing, and this system has a chance to develop into a tropical storm later this week. Environmental conditions won't be a slam dunk here. The cold front is associated with the upper-level jet stream, causing strong wind shear along the Gulf Coast that disfavors an organizing storm. However, the position of a series of shortwave troughs over Texas through ~Friday also facilitates strong upper-level divergence over the Gulf near a jet streak entrance region, which could help the disturbance fight off the wind shear a bit. Computer models are splitting into two broad camps: 1. Most AI-based models (see AIFS example) show the system moving northeast more quickly, prior to the Texas shortwave trough lifting out. This would place the storm in the most favorable position to intensify, and would bring it into the central or eastern Gulf Coast by the weekend. 2. Several physics-based models (see ECMWF example) are slower to lift the disturbance northward, allowing the Texas shortwave to exit and the favorable jet dynamics to subside, giving way to a more purely hostile environment for a potential tropical storm. The result is a weaker, messier storm that waits until next week to attempt a move toward the Gulf Coast, if ever. Significant uncertainty remains in this scenario, but this disturbance is one to watch this week. Even if a strong storm is avoided, heavy rains may stay in the forecast for portions of the Gulf Coast. Keep an eye on the forecast from the National Hurricane Center, which currently gives a 70% chance of a tropical cyclone forming.

We now have an invest area (#91L) in the Gulf. Some satellite observations so far today: 1. There is a bit of a double-barrelled look as two mid-level vorticity maxima appear (circled). This is the beginning of the expected "stretching out" process (see yesterday's post). 2. Surface rotation is more apparent today and confirmed by surface observations (circled), albeit still very weak relative to the mid-levels. 3. Convective (thunderstorm) coverage is muted so far, likely due to some dry air punching into the north side via #Georgia and northern #Florida. The preexisting environment was never impressively moist either. These signs don't point toward rapid development short-term, but the system nevertheless has a chance to become a tropical depression or storm over the next couple of days. The National Hurricane Center has bumped those odds to 40% today.

Tropical Storm #Isaias has begun steadily intensifying according to aerial reconnaissance data, with strong flow of 60-65 mph (at flight level) wrapping around the previously much weaker south side of the vortex. This indicates that a nascent inner core is becoming established. Central pressure has also fallen ~5 millibars during the past 3 hours. This trend will likely continue as the inner core matures, bringing Isaias to hurricane intensity in the not-too-distant future.

There's a big 'ole African easterly wave (circled) entering the eastern tropical Atlantic, but the region is remarkably dry and stable for now, indicated by large stratus and stratocumulus decks (dull gray color). This is unsurprising during a strong El Niño year, when windows of opportunity for tropical development in the main development region are typically much shorter than usual. The best opportunities will likely be from late August through September.

The remnants of #Dolly are approaching the #LeewardIslands today, where strong winds and heavy rains will occur in some islands tonight, spreading to the #VirginIslands and #PuertoRico on Monday. The wave remains vertically decoupled due to westerly shear, with the mid-level vorticity (spin) maximum displaced well ENE of the surface vorticity maximum. Dolly's remnants will be monitored later next week as they track west-northwestward through the Bahamas region and potentially the Gulf, in case environmental conditions make regeneration possible. At the moment, this appears to have a low probability of occurring, but is worth monitoring.

🌀 The Central Pacific won't calm down. As Hurricane #Lala moves on after thrashing #Hawaii last weekend, another system (dubbed Invest #90E) is lurking behind, poised to soon develop and move into the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands. 🌀 Environmental conditions may be a bit less favorable for 90E than they were for Lala, but the steering flow could feasibly carry it along a similar trajectory to Lala, approaching from the southeast, and the storm could track close enough to cause impacts to the Big Island as soon as Saturday night, then spreading westward. 🌀 Residents in the islands should be prepared for a potential second round of hazardous conditions if this new storm passes too close. Keep a close eye on the forecast from the National Hurricane Center and NWS Honolulu this week.

Tropical Storm #Lala's center has now passed south of #Oahu, where a Flash Flood Warning is in effect. The primary rain band is beginning to move northward, giving me a break at my location - things were spicy here throughout the night. Significant impacts are being observed throughout Oahu, with 105K households without power and some major roads closed. Significant flooding and wind impacts also occurred on the Big Island. Hope everyone stays safe and smart today.

Tropical Depression 5 (#TD5) is maintaining a central cluster of thunderstorms even into the diurnal convective minimum, indicating its local environment is becoming more conducive to intensification. Earlier recon aircraft data also suggested a compact inner core wind field may be forming, which would also support quick intensification. The updated @NHC_Atlantic forecast has significantly raised the forecast intensity peak to 60 mph max winds, with an associated increase in coastal storm surge risk. This evening's planned 00Z recon mission will confirm whether a phase of quick intensification is beginning.
