Excluding Perlis where MCA used to have 1 seat in Titi Tinggi all the way up to 2022, the last election (federal or state) in which MCA won more seats than DAP was in 2008 (Pahang and Johor). Yesterday in Johor, it happened after nearly 20 years. If I were DAP, I would treat this as an existential crisis and consider leaving PH. Clearly, compromising every principle for the sake of keeping 1 man in power is starting to take a toll - the chickens are coming home to roost. Malaysians are no longer afraid to punish political parties.

A helpful way of contextualising what happened to PH in yesterday's N9 election. We need to use GE-15 (Nov 2022) as a comparison, using saluran data to get the implied DUN result. This is because in 2023, PH and BN split the 36 seats between them, so PH only contested 19. What's the conclusion: • In 30 out of 36 seats, PH's vote share dropped. And if you look at the chart, there were some huge double-digit drops in places like Seremban Jaya, Lukut, and Sri Tanjung where PH performed well in GE-15. • In 6 out of 36 seats, PH's vote share rose, all by small margins. Interestingly, both the 'giants' who lost yesterday (Anthony Loke in Chennah, Tok Min in Linggi) both *increased* PH's vote share compared to 2022. But it was not enough, since on the other side, BN/PN were consolidated. Overall, this chart should be a HUGE concern for PH. You can only argue that "We maintained, but BN/PN came together" if you maintain or increase your vote share in every seat (like Loke and Tok Min). This chart shows the exact opposite - almost everywhere, PH has lost ground.
