A former CIA analyst was sentenced to three years in prison for leaking classified information online in October 2024. Asif William Rahman joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 2016 after graduating from Yale University and was assigned to an office inside the US embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia at the time of the leak. On October 17th, 2024, Rahman printed two top-secret classified documents related to planned air strikes on targets in Iran by the Israeli Air Force. The strikes were in retaliation for a missile barrage launched by Iran against Israel on October 1st. According to the New York Post, the documents originated with the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and included satellite imagery of Israeli air bases taken on October 15th and 16th, plus the types of missiles to be used, based on the observed movement of munitions carts on the air bases. He smuggled the documents out of the embassy in his backpack, photographed them, and sent them to several individuals online. The following day, the images were broadcast on the Telegram app by an account named Middle East Spectator. They quickly spread online, causing Israel to delay the planned strikes until October 26th. Prior to October 17th he also printed and photographed at least 15 other classified documents on several occasions beginning in the spring of 2024. According to the Washington Post, Rahman deleted 1.5 gigabytes of data from his workstation after printing the documents and then destroyed a smartphone and router used to transmit the documents. He had also downloaded and retained other classified documents related to the Middle East even after losing access to them. Rahman was arrested in Cambodia by the FBI in November 2024 and pleaded guilty to two charges related to espionage in January 2025. Although he faced between 6.5 and 20 years in prison, he was sentenced to just 37 months of incarceration in June 2025, based partly on cooperation with investigators and prosecutors.
